Douglas XB42 "Mixmaster" c. 1944

post-8022-0-88170100-1372333812.jpg

The XB-42 was officially named the Mixmaster because the whirling action of the propellers driven by the aircraft's two V-1710 liquid-cooled V-cylinder engines was likened to the whirly action of the beater of the Sunbeam Mixmaster kitchen appliance.

On 4 November 1954, Sea Dart BuNo 135762 disintegrated in midair over San Diego Bay during a demonstration for naval officials and the press, killing Convair test pilot Charles E. Richbourg when he inadvertently exceeded the airframe's limitations.

As an aside, what kind of Rifle is this GI carrying? a prototype M14?

Got a more larger image of it here. The GI we found is armed with the FN FAL Rifle that was trialed by the Army and the Marine Corps in the 50s
