Here's one.......maybe, a circa 1950 photo posted in the ever popular Post WWII, 50s & 60s U.S. Air Force, look at the indivdual at the far left of the rank, an officer or a cadet? the patch seems to look alot the Air ROTC from here. It might of been taken at universty, Georgia Tech, Clemson, maybe Perdue, Wake Forest etc etc, can't recall.

It was from what I found the standard under arms item for officers and men of this unit back then and other Washington based units that had Honor Guard Duty.

In this photo below we see an Honor Guard in Dress Blues of a unit other than the 3rd Infantry (note no Buff Straps), unit/branch unknown, we can date it to late 40s early 50s, not after 1951, note the quadruple discs and the small Golden Light 1948 Regulation ranks, and of course no Blue stuff as they may not even be Infantry. Here we see the same garrison belt Black, along with the leather first aid pouch indicating it use then as a item worn with Dress Blues when under arms.

Here's another photo of the Dress Blues with shoulder patches, this one far away from Washington DC, early 1951, these guys are at the Presidio of San Fransisco and are members of a 6th Army Band, they are in the company of the 6th Army Pipe band.

So now we are seeing that the wear of shoulder patches and tabs on Blues was not limited to unit in Washington, makes one now ask the question if it was all/only Honor Guard/Bands that had as a uniform the Dress Blues that shoulder patches were allowed to be worn on?

Not "perhaps." A company of the 1st BN did deploy to Iraq. And remember, all battalions of the 3rd Infantry are "Old Guard," not just the 1st and 4th based in Virginia at Ft, Myer. The 2nd Bn. At Ft. Lewis is "Old Guard," too.

They're absolutely correct. I just wrote this for another conversation:

I am well aware of all that (I was employed by TOG at Ft. Myer from 1992-2005), but as far as I know, no elements of 1st or 4th BN deployed to Afghanistan. To the Horn of Africa and Iraq, yes, but not to Afghanistan.

Only the 2nd Battalion which was reactivated in March 2001 served in Afghanistan in 2011 following its 2003 (or 4), 2006-7 & 2009 deployments to Iraq all with the 3rd SBCT 2nd ID from Lewis. The MDW assigned 3rd Inf Reg deployed B Company to Ethiopia in 2003, D Co to Djibouti in 2007 & C Co to Taji, Iraq in 2009 which I have photos of some of their stay on Taji when I visited their camp. So a MDW CSIB/SSI-FWTS could be awarded for either tour in Africa or the one Iraq with the other guys being legible for the 2nd ID for Afghanistan & the other Iraq tours.

In 2004 the CG of the MDW authorized a "provincial reorganization" on 16 March 2004 so that in addition to the ceremonial roles they could become more like a maneuver brigade & deploy in support of GWOT, OIF, & OEF if need be.

USARV SSI worn with an Airborne tab on the ACU of Chaplain (Lt. Col) Lt. Col. Irvine Bryer. Photo came from a 2007 online issue of "Stars and Stripes". The article doesn't reference his particular assignment in Vietnam but says he served two tours.

After 5th SFG left the RVN in March 1971, SF personnel assigned to CCN, CCC, & CCS, became TF1AE, TF2AE, & TF3AE, and wore baseball caps and USARV SS, but I believe that was after Byers did his second tour.
