I.B. is a friend of mine, he just turned 96 years old. He is in good health, except for his hearing. He loves to read, so I am bringing him books all the time. I got this Walther from him about 2 years ago. He had it nickle plated after he got home.

There was a time when you could send pretty much any weapon home for $5. I used ot know a 26th YD guy who had a stunning collection of German pistols mostly aquired that way. Not sure when they stopped it.

Have you ever shown him Spearheading D-Day?

Nice PP made in 1942. Most of these WWII bring back pistols were plated before they were brought back. Once the war machine was halted after the war many skilled people were out of work and would plate anything you brought in for a pack of cigarets or extra rations.

I would be interested to know if he really had the PP plated here in the US or before he left for home? If he did have it plated overseas I would love to hear the story.

I know after 65+ years after the fact, remembering can really get scrambled?

a WWII vet that worked in supply told me he sent home pistols and marked the box as "shoes"

Having worked in a gun shop in the Chicago Metro area on and off for 40years,I have seen my share of bring backs, from mint to all CHROMED out.Back in the day when Chicago produced things, the platers at the Schwinn Bicycle factory would plate anything for a couple of bucks. Some times they would not even take them apart. When junior brings dads P-38 in that he wants to get up and running, the tears flow when we show him the acids have eaten the insides up beyond repair.

20 years ago I bought an entire box of weapons from an ETO MP and the HSC was nickled and he told me that he had it done overseas. Thank GOD he didn't nickle the rest of them as there was a fantastic VG-1 in the box.
