His name was Archie Seacrest. Good impression in the last pic. I like that one. I know the cavalry-specific items are harder to find, but are the other gov't issue items (helmets, etc) difficult to obtain in Australia as well? I have found a few bits and pieces in Australia but i rely on US dealers and Ebay mainly. Some stuff i have been given by veterans,including some of the photos i post around the place. 124cav Posted May 22, 2015 Share #62 Posted May 22, 2015 This is my crack at an enlisted Veterinary corps soldier from the 18th Veterinary Evacuation Hospital (Forward) The 18th had the task of caring for the animals in the MARS task force. Questions and comments are welcome. The brush and curry comb are worn on the pistol belt as is a "airborne" canteen cover. A 225Q sheath knife is worn too. I just finished a memoir from a guy in the 475th Infantry, and he stated that the 475th received 500 replacements straight from CRTC, who were originally bound for the 124th Cav. I did not know that. Out of 598 men and officers 500 volunteered for "hazardous and dangerous duty in a combat zone" They arrived in theatre completely prepared for mounted duty too by the way. The machete was issued one per mounted man. The MOS 9745 trooper is not issued a bayonet but rather an M3 trench knife in M8a1 scabbard although i am yet to find a photo of one in use by a horse trooper.Everything is original.If you any questions please holler. 124cav Posted June 8, 2016 Share #75 Posted June 8, 2016 16th Constabulary Squadron Horse Platoon,1949. By 1949 the 1947 Utility Uniform was starting to circulate in Germany. The use of German spurs is well documented. In 1949 the Horse Platoon of the 16th Constabulary took place in a week long field exercise . The mounted platoon (less one section) took part in Squadron strength manoeuvres at the peak of the Berlin Blockade. As part of the HQ troop the mission was reconnaissance and liaison. The horse platoon had the job of also patrolling areas of the Grunewald forest not accessible to vehicle. Patrols operated around the clock and in all weather.A great effort was made to prove the viability of the horses and the Squadron CO commended the men and the horses on a job well done. Troopers rode the 1928 McClellan saddle. Troopers carried gas masks,pistols and rifles. The water bottle was not carried on the saddle though and photos show troopers using both 1910 pouches and m1941 mounted types. The dressing pouch is carried to the rear as recommended for mounted troops. Medical and veterinary support came from the 7766th Horse Troop.
