Below is what I believe to be a Japanese cig case, that my grandfather took during the battle for Attu.

After my uncle passed away my aunt gave me a box of his things. When I first saw it, I didn't know what it was and ended up putting it back in the box. It wasn't until sometime later, I was going through the box again and I looked at it a little closer. I was astonished that I missed it the first time. It has "ATTU" "May 13, 1943" scratched into the side of it. (it my be hard to see in the picture. I did my best but its to faint, it looks like it may have been scratched on with a knife or something.) This document is what leads me to believe it is a cigarette case.

I know that the battle for Attu began on May 11, 1943, so I'm assuming that the 13th is when he captured it.

That is great. The capture papers to go with it are really neat.

I was just wondering, do you know what unit your grandfather served with? I assume he was in a unit of the 7th Infantry Division.

Yeah I do, he served in Battery G of the 78th Coast Artillery Regiment and yep the 78th was part of the 7th Infantry Division. Shortly after the battle the 78th was broken up, and he ended up with the 591st Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion. Grandpa was on Attu for 20 straight months.

Thanks, I was just wondering. I served nearly 10 years with the 7th, though about 40 years later than your grandfather

No I didn't serve. even tho my family has a rich military history. None of the men ever talked about it, so I grew up in a fairly military free house. I went to college after high school joining the army didn't even cross my mind. That may have been different had I known more about my family history at that time.

I find the items your grandfather had listed on his trophy certificate, very interesting . A blanket, gloves ,socks and a cig case.

Very wise. A samurai sword is nice, but it won't keep you warm in the Aleutian Islands.
