268th C.A. Posted November 6, 2024 #176 Posted November 6, 2024 The soldier pictured with the M3 Grease gun, Cameras and C-Ration box is my next-door Neighbour. SP4 Al Johns. NY. The photographer is Dennis Fisher who is a friend of his. He was a USMC photographer. I asked his about the picture.
usmc69 Posted July 17, 2025 #179 Posted July 17, 2025 On my second tour in SEA, we were in Thailand at MCAS Rose Garden. One day I came in the squadron maintenance building via the back entrance. On the concrete slab sat the squadron armorer with a five pound maul. He had a stack of M3's and was pounding them flat! I asked him what are you doing. His answer was that they were being destroyed due to being taken out of service. Tried to buy one from him and no dice. Said he that he had to show the armory officer the remains so they could account for them...........
Retired Army Noncom Posted August 13, 2025 #180 Posted August 13, 2025 I was issued one when I first arrived in Nam and I was the only one in the entire Bn that carried one!!!Why, because the unit, 1st MI Bn (Aerial Recon) when alerted for Nam, the last time their TO&E was updated, they did not update the Signal Section and the Signal Sgt still was issued with an M-3, my soldiers were issued the M1 carbines.
