Then (1944) Col Sink of 506th was awared the same Dutch Decoration.

The "Bronze Lion" was instituted on 30 March 1944 as an award to hose who distinguished themselves in action against the enemy by performing especially brave and meritorious acts. Could be awarded to civilians and foreigners. It is the second highest award for gallantry. That from "Orders and Decorations of the Netherlands" by Meijer, Mulder, and Wagenaar. That source does not say it is an officer only award.

I think a very attractive full sized medal.

Based on the link I pasted, it certainly isn't. 4 of the 8 paratroopers listed were EM's.

Doing a quick cut and paste from the web site, here's a list of possibles. I think you can eliminate most of the higher ranking recipients, as they's probably have more U.S. personal awards than two Bronze Stars

I need help identifying the last ribbon on this rack.

post-87451-0-09925600-1356138420.jpg

On the EAME ribbon, are those devices an Invasion Arrowhead (upside down?), a silver campaign star, and a bronze campaign star?

If so, and I realize most all of us know this, the recipient was credited with 6 ETO campaigns. That should provide a bit of direction on possible owners.

Without looking, I'm not sure how many campaign credits the 82nd or its attached units garnered. But generally speaking, 101st Abn men would have a max of four campaign credits (if they served in all four credited campaigns). So I think that would suggest the rack wearer was not 101st.

Merry Christmas to all, JimB

Nice Rack!

If you want to identify the recipient I think you need more information than just only the ribbon rack....

Looking at the figures; 87 Bronze Lions were awarded to Americans. 17 awards were made to the USN, 4 to the USAF and the rest, 66, were made to the army. All 66 Bronze Lions that were awarded to the army were made for actions during Market Garden and almost all were paratroopers. No real way to peal it down to one person I am afraid.....

If you, for instance, only would have the rank of the recipient, the selection of the person would be much easier!

Here is all I know about the rack. It belonged to an officer from the 82nd ABN. I know this because a second matching rack is on a uniform in the booth at the antique mall which has a 82nd patch on the right shoulder. There are a total of four officer dress uniforms with the 82nd combat patch all are tailor made in Texas and none have a name or rank on them. One of the uniforms is tan and the rest are all the modern green color. It is believed they uniforms came from an estate sale in Texas.

I supose this would have been the rack he wore home from WWII as it doesn't have awards which would have been added after 1945. Since most of the uniforms are like the current issue I am sure he would have had additional awards which could not be added to a custom bar. There was no Ike style jackets in the group. One of the uniforms has an orange lanyard for the Order of The Orange Lanyard.

Thats pretty cool, if i were you i would either go back and buy the rest of the stuff to keep it togther as a group or at least go back and take pics of everything or examine the other uniforms for a name or ID if possible....mike

The presence of the Bronze Lion ribbon (1st awarded Oct 1945) and the Occupation ribbon (first awarded 1947) would indicate the rack wasn't made up until after 1947.

The 82nd returned stateside in January 1946. So is the occupation ribbon correct for the 82nd? Or was he maybe assigned to another unit before coming home?

Yes, 30 days of occupation service entitled you to the medal, even retroactively.

My point is, with multiple identical ribbon bars (at least 2 including the one still at the antique mall), he was most likely still in service in 1947.

I think ID-ing the ribbons is a possibility. The Bronzen Leeuw (as we Dutch call it) was awarded to the 82nd and the 101st ABN division.

The facts now are:

- 82nd ABN division

- Officer

- Texas

Wead out the known ribbon racks, like Lcol Vandervoort and perhaps a name pops out.

Good luck and keep the info coming.

FYI a few Bronzen Leeuwen were awarded to Dutch army personell for Afghanistan.

Hey Herman,

You also found your way to this forum I see... ;)

Back to the ribbon bar; Herman is right when selecting on the 82nd and officers, no problem there. The tricky part are the last 2 criteria, finding out the home state and eliminating know ribbon racks...

But we will give it a try. The following 27 names are all 82nd Airborne Division officers who were decorated with the Bronze Lion:

At first sight I agree but looking at is very critically I think there is a flaw in your reasoning. What if the recipient received his Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star of Legion of Merit after receiving his occupation medal (1947)? By just elimination everybody with a decoration that is not shown here in this group you may delete the wearer of this rack as well, or am I wrong?

Hmmm, I see your point. Look at it this way, by eliminating everybody with additional valor awards one can narrow it down to perhaps one name.

If a mistake is made in this process, just head back to the point of the mistake and try again. What is there to lose...... A list with 27 candidates as a startingpoint doesn't look like a lot of work IMHO.

Lets take Lcol Ben Vandervoort for instance. He also had a French Croix de Guerre and two Purple Hearts. IMO he can be taken from the shortlist.

And offcourse you can delete all KIA's aswell.

I think that flashlarue should go back to the shop with the uniforms and give us more info, and perhaps some pictures, on them. If the rank on the postwar uniform is lets say Major, you can rule out all with a higher rank.

Just my two pence.

Herman

Snakepuke, I shall go through my papers at home the coming days to shorten the list of 27.

Just to give you a touch with regard to this topic, look what i bought a couple of years back.

Its Colonel Charles 'Chuck' Billingslea uniform of around 1953 - 1955 sporting a ribbon of the Dutch Militaire Willems Orde, Ridder 4e klasse (Knight 4th class).

regards

Herman
