tdogchristy90 Posted December 13, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2012 I've had the itch to build a model, preferable the lcpv landing craft from d-day. I went to my local hobby shop but they didnt have any. Now if I order online, say amazon, does anyone have a recommended brand for a basic set? Thanks. RustyCanteen Posted December 13, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2012 I would suggest finding one that looks like the kind of kit you are interested in buying, then doing an internet search for completed models and reviews on that particular kit. strawberry 9 Posted December 13, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 13, 2012 I used this kit in my D-Day diorama. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lindberg-1-32-LCVP-L-C-V-P-Landing-Craft-Vehicle-Personnel-/310528177564?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item484cebf59c
uplandmod Posted December 13, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 13, 2012 Is that a Typo? should be LCVP? I buy most all my online kits from Squadron mail order, one of the best companies in the business Ive been using them since the 1980's. http://www.squadron....CFSPhQgodQTIAXw I would steer away from the Lindberg kit, and go towards the Italeri, which is a modern kit. I plan to build this as soon as I'm finished with my Italeri LVT kit: http://www.squadron....ct-p/it6479.htm The Lindberg kit is from the 50's, and has a lot of toy like features such as a motorized engine, etc. Fun to build but not to accurate in terms of small details: http://www.squadron....t-p/li70866.htm If you want a smaller scale I'm working on the Pegasus in 1/72. An inexpensive kit missing small details but a fun kit to build: http://www.squadron....t-p/peg7650.htm Heller also makes one but I've never seen it in person: http://www.squadron....t-p/hr49995.htm These are really the only four kits available of the LCVP. Good Luck! LF
tdogchristy90 Posted December 13, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted December 13, 2012 Yes, lcpv, sorry. And I'll check them all out. Thanks a lot guys. I just finished putting together a Sherman to hold me over. It was kind of small time, attach wheels and done lol. It did scratch the itch though. RustyCanteen Posted December 13, 2012 Share #7 Posted December 13, 2012 Eventually you may want to start scratchbuilding parts or even whole models as you gain experience. RC
tdogchristy90 Posted December 14, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted December 14, 2012 Upland, Can you post pictures of your Pegasus when done? I'm curious of the finished quality.
gwb123 Posted December 14, 2012 Share #9 Posted December 14, 2012 I loved my Lindberg landing craft model! You could rig a string up through the center deck that raised and lowered the ramp! The finest possible realism! It fit the Monogram jeep kit very nicely. Keep in mind this was 1970...
uplandmod Posted December 14, 2012 Share #10 Posted December 14, 2012 lol! I don't fear nostalgia builds, I actually like many historic lindberg builds, I built many in my youth and they have many interesting subjects with some crazy gimmicks. Ever see their TBM? So many cool features! I just wanted to give some examples of the kits available of the LCVP and what to expect from each kit, I'm sure whatever he picks up will be fun. Yes, I plan to write a review of it for the website I write for CollectionDX. I planned to link the review here. LF
MilitaryPlaques Posted December 14, 2012 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2012 Consider a wood craft? http://www.militaryplaques.com/store/marine-corps-plaques http://www.militaryplaques.com/
Cobrahistorian Posted December 14, 2012 Share #12 Posted December 14, 2012 Trumpeter and Italeri both have LCM-3 kits out too. Here's a link to a good comparison of the two: http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/misc/lcm3/lcm3.htm Dragon also does a figure set of 29th Division soldiers on D-Day and their Rangers at Pointe Du Hoc can be easily converted to be 29th ID guys as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dragon-1-35-US-29th-Infantry-Division-Omaha-DR6211-/250893199947 http://www.yahobby.com/dragon-rangers-normandy-1944-premium-edition-6306-p-1197.html
siege1863 Posted December 14, 2012 Share #13 Posted December 14, 2012 One consideration in selecting a kit that has not been discussed is the scale. If you intend to add numerous figures or display the craft with vehicles, etc., then you would want a kit in 1/35 scale. Much easier to find a variety of figure poses, equipment, and so on. The Lindberg kit, in 1/32 scale, could be an issue. Ever since I got into modeling, I have avoided the 1/32 scale kits because of the difficulty in finding compatible kits or because the version/variant I wished to build was not available. uplandmod Posted December 14, 2012 Share #14 Posted December 14, 2012 You have a point with scale. I prefer 1/72 but its impossible to find good figures in 1/72 most of them are those gnarly soft plastic ones produced in the 1970's. I would go with the Italari as stated above should be no problem finding quality figures. Consider going with an LCM for your tank, that would be cool!
