Guest German1981 Posted February 25, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2008 Hi, I m looking after a veteran/photos or facts. I live in a small village in the middle of Germany. At the 8. April in 1945 the US-Army arrived us, I don't know who exactly. It was Pattons Army, may be the 8.Corps. Who can help me, who know more? Thanks for your help. Regards from Germany
Jeeper704 Posted February 25, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2008 It would be helpful to know what town/village you live in. Erwin
Guest German1981 Posted February 25, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 25, 2008 Yes of course. The name ist Winterstein near Eisenach (Bill Clinton inspected Eisenach in may 1998). A small village but there was a small headquarter with some officers, in a old Nazischool, only some weeks later it changed and russian troupes came into my village. I hope the link will work, http://maps.google.de/maps/mm?hl=de&ie...113811&z=13 regards from Germany
Jeeper704 Posted February 25, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 25, 2008 Danke. Well, as far as I can see, your village is not so far from Ohrdruf (south of Gotha). Ohrdruf was liberated by troops of the 4th Armored Division on April 4, 1945. Maybe it were elements of this unit who liberated your place. They had a Command Post in Grossenbehringen on April 3, 1945 But I also found out the 89th Infantry Division had its Command Post in Waltershausen on April 8, 1945. They took Eisenach on April 6, 1945. In short; if it was Armor, then it probably was the 4th Armored Division. If it was Infantry, then it might be the 89th Infantry Division. Guest German1981 Posted February 26, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 26, 2008 Hi. Thats intresting, the old people said Waltershausen will inspect at the 2.April. Because you can see in the map the highway (Autobahn), this is a old highway, Hitler builded before the 2.WW. So the first troups from Eisenach could be very fast in Walterhausen, and it would be logic that the armors used the highway. Ohrdruf was very "hot" because there was and is a big drill ground. The old people talked obout armors in the village so 4th Armored Division could be probably. I know that this troupes came over the Werra ( the river in the west) and inspect Eisenach. You said it to. Ok. But the 4th Armored Division visited Winterstein only a short time, than a other squad came to border it. Is there anybody left of the 4th Armored Division? Veterans? Thanks for all.
