Brig Posted February 26, 2015 #26 Posted February 26, 2015 It's interesting the attitude the GIs have in many of the goof-off photos towards holding weapons, versus what you see in European photos of a similar theme. I've seen the exact same attitude in European photos, many of Germans clowning around in similar fashion with Walthers and Lugers
gwb123 Posted February 26, 2015 #27 Posted February 26, 2015 Here's two of my Father Goofing around at Camp Breckenridge KY 1945, he's the PFC on the left in each of them. Don't know why, but he started out as a Tank Crewman (Knox) wound up as a MP (Breckenridge) then wound up ultimately as a Radio Operator (The Canal Zone). phppgHHavPM.jpgphpB8cdkCPM.jpg I know these photos were taken over 70 years ago, and probably everything was fine. But the Safety Officer in me just cringes when I see .45's waived around like that. These guys have watched too many Jimmy Cagney gangster movies. One of the sharpest officers I ever knew managed to shoot himself in the leg when he holstered a .45 that he thought was unloaded. Somehow both he and his career managed to survive the incident with a grazing wound, but it is a lesson he never forgot.
Brig Posted February 26, 2015 #28 Posted February 26, 2015 I've seen more ND's than I care to remember, recruits are negligent that way, which is why they only get ammo on the line. Worst two, however, were National Guard in Iraq. Some LT ND'ed an AT-4 into a connex box during a demonstration (I know, I know...3 safeties, an audience, and you literally look through the tube for the rocket, no idea how he was that dumb). And, same unit, same deployment, a guardsman in the turrent ND'ed 2 rounds of his MK-19 that narrowly missed my tower by all of six inches. I cringe when I see such photos, as well
notinfringed Posted February 27, 2015 #29 Posted February 27, 2015 This is a great topic. I have quite a few of these in my albums. Here are a few of my favorites. First, from a GI stationed here in Fairbanks. The picture was inscribed "Ball Game": I may have posted this photo elsewhere. These are Navy Construction Crewmen on one of the Aleutian Islands. Not sure if this is OSHA approved:

Larry569 Posted February 28, 2015 #32 Posted February 28, 2015 Which one's your dad? My Dad, John Luko, is on the left.

stealthytyler Posted March 1, 2015 #36 Posted March 1, 2015 Love the details in the sailor photo. Just wish it were clearer. Thanks for sharing! Paul I have about 100 photos from my grandfathers Navy platoon buddy including the camera that took these photos. Unfortunately, it was not the best camera and all of the shots have exposure problems. Clear enough to see what is going on but a bit of a shame.

Abomb Posted August 14, 2015 #48 Posted August 14, 2015 Hello, Here is a pic of guys who were training at Fort Dupont, DE in April 1941. A bit prescient, eh ?
Piper Cub Posted August 18, 2015 #49 Posted August 18, 2015 Some funny pictures in this thread! The crane truck in post 38 looks like it might be built on an M26. Does anyone know those trucks well enough to tell better than I can? I've seen photos of others that were built into cranes but I think they were post military modifications.
hardheaded Posted November 1, 2015 #50 Posted November 1, 2015 The guy in the chair came to our unit TDY for around 3 weeks. He was a great guy so we had to break out a camera and get a picture of him. Seriously though, we hated to see him go back.
