I recently visited the "Iowa and the Civil War: Nothing But Victory" exhibit at the State Historical Society in Des Moines. An exceptional exhibit with plenty of great artifacts, including uniforms, flags, weapons, photographs--even a window from a building in Charleston that a Union soldier crawled through to escape from prison. Well worth your time if you're in the area.

Here's an artifical leg, worn by a veteran of the 25th Iowa, and the saddle and saber of General Samuel Curtis, the Union commander at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

Dang... I was just in Des Moines. Hopefully it will be there for awile. The State Historical Society museum is first class.

Also, for those who go, it is an easy walk to the state capitol, where there are some Civil War artillery pieces standing guard.
