Sharing my Tiger Stripes, Coarse / Splotch pattern.

This shirt belongs to Frederick Alan Short, a PFC-94 (Patrol Craft Fast / Swift Boats) members.

GMG3 stands for Gunner’s Mate (Guns) Petty Officer 3rd Class, thats why it’s stenciled “Gunner” inside of the shirt.

Details:

-Stenciled “Short” (name), right front pocket.
-Stenciled “Swift” (i refer this as Swift Boats), left front pocket.
-Stenciled “Sat Cong” in left sleeves.
-Lastly, stenciled “Gunner, Short F” inside of the jacket.

Thank you 🖖🏼

Hello all!

I have recently become curious about the origins of a specific Tiger Stripe jacket I have had laying around for years. It appears to have the outlines of patches that had previously been sewn on and removed sometime before I came into possession of the jacket. I have been unable to discover very much about the jacket in my own research, and thought I might reach out to y'all and see if you recognize anything that could help me to determine the history of the garment. I have attached photos of the jacket below. In some of them I attempted to backlight the jacket in order to make the outline of the patches easier to see, but I can take some photos non-backlit if that might help with identification.

I appreciate any help I can get in learning more about this jacket. Thanks!

I have attached and labeled the photos below.

Fairly modern tiger stripe top. Looks like the ones made by tru-spec, but not 100% sure. All of the manufacturers info should be on the tag along the button fly. Looks like the right shoulder had a SF patch with SF and Ranger tab above it. Left breast pocket was probably a CIB, jump wings, and maybe a dive qual patch? Right breast pocket was branch tape and possibly a foreign jump wing, and left shoulder I have no idea. This was either patched up as a veterans parade/reunion jacket, or it was fabricated to fool collectors. No way of telling for sure, but what you do have is a fairly modern tiger stripe top.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip Jakob, the manufacture's tag was so faded I somehow hadn't noticed it in the years I have owned the jacket. The tag was located right where you said it would be, and it does indicate it is a "TRU-SPEC". You were spot on! Good thing I got this for free.

Thank you very much for your help,

- Patrick

Cap Camouflage Pattern I

However unlikely there is a chance it is real, it had a Special Forces tab at some point which was only introduced in 1985, of course that doesn't rule out someone just doing a terrible job of faking a Vietnam uniform. SF has worn tigerstripe on rare occasions after the Vietnam war.

In post 1691 of this thread, I posted a modern tiger stripe top that belonged to a member of 7th SFG.  It is fully badged and named.  While these badged tops are rare, they still do show up from time to time,  Tiger stripe (green and desert) has been used extensively throughout the Global War on Terror by Special Forces and Special Operations types.

Although these are sometimes seen, one thing to keep in mind with this particular jacket is that there is a SF patch with  the SF tab above it and Ranger tab above that on the right shoulder. If this was a recently worn jacket, the SF tab would most likely be on the left shoulder, per regulations.

You are correct.  I'd say that most of all modern tiger stripes with patches are for veterans and posers.  However, there are those rare instances where some are actually legitimate.  I just don't want collectors to pass over a gem while out hunting.

Afghan made/tailored tiger stripe combat uniform set from a 1st SFG soldier.  Pants are a Crye copy and the shirt is a Patagonia copy.   Base t-shirt is a bootleg Chinese copy of a 5.11 Tactical shirt.
