gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #26 Posted December 9, 2012 Another display focused on Iowa war correspondents and those who wrote about the war. This display was about a gentleman who was the Third Army press briefing officer... an apt use of talent for a former newspaper editor!
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #27 Posted December 9, 2012 Everyday items from the WWII GI's daily existance were also on display...WWII individual ration boxes.
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #28 Posted December 9, 2012 History repeats itself... WWII Service Banner from the same hospital as the previous one from WWI...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #30 Posted December 9, 2012 Iowa National Guard, 1950's and 1960's...(separate exhibit)...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #31 Posted December 9, 2012 The Silent Service... it's always amazed me how many sailors are recruited into the US Navy from the landlocked states of the Midwest... everyone I have ever asked has told me they joined because they "wanted to see something different." Simulated submarine control room, complete with working periscope...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #32 Posted December 9, 2012 Iowa Air National Guard..... exhibits run from the early days to the present.
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #33 Posted December 9, 2012 The Vietnam exhibit includes a nicely restored UH-1...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #34 Posted December 9, 2012 More Vietnam items...including a number of captured items...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #35 Posted December 9, 2012 Vietnam POW items related to Lt. Larry Spencer....
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #37 Posted December 9, 2012 An unusual USMC recon bike... and something more familiar to many of our Forum members... an M113 personnel carrier in desert garb. Flying cover above is a Huey Cobra. (There is also a nice vehicle park outside of the museum with a selection of tanks, trucks and artillery.) The final display area will be built to resemble an Iraqi village...
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #38 Posted December 9, 2012 Spoils of war...brought back by two enterprising Iowa soldiers... this painting of the former dictator has to be about 6 foot tall. One wonders how they got this home!
gwb123 Posted December 9, 2012 #39 Posted December 9, 2012 To end our quick tour of the Iowa Gold Star Museum... a photo project documenting the surviving veterans of WWII. The photos here do not even cover half of what is displayed in this fine facility. They are still building and revising their exhibits, and I hope to return to see more in coming years. Comments welcome.
