Here is a field little known, the evolution of seaman ranks on cuffs and collars on their jumpers. Before the mid-1940s, seaman displayed their ranks on their cuffs and earlier on their collars as well, believe it or not? Cuffs sometimes were plain and other times could have one to four stripes, same for their collars. These here were for 1841-1854. The fifth one is for 1852-1859 (white collar on blue wool jumper). 1852-1866 a blue collar on a white jumper is the sixth picture. 1859-1866 was a blue collar on a blue jumper, the 7th picture here. 1866-1869, 8th pictures shows a single row of white tape on a black collars for Boys, Coal Heavers, and Landsmen, the higher one went in experience as a seaman, the more stripes on their collars, not just their cuffs. :D
