Master Engineer Senior Grade chevrons shown here, they were made in anticipation by manufacturers and never ever issued nor worn. The Army of the United States had many different chevrons from 1902 to 1918 and after the Great War decided to reduce the number of enlisted ranks to something like they have today, except that they were Grade 1 for Master Sergeant Grade 2 for Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant, Grade 3 for Staff Sergeant, Grade 4 for Sergeantm Grade 5 for Corporal, and Grade 6 for Private First Class. These were something likke the earlier war-time Master Engineer chevrons except a navy-like eagle was placed at the top of the specialty marks and above the half wreath as seen here. w00t.gif Sarge Booker of Tujunga, California

Thanks for posting this interesting set of chevrons, Sarge Booker.

According to Emerson (in Chevrons p. 182) these four chevrons were approved by the Secretary of War on January 7, 1920, and approved official samples were made and sealed (May 1920) but the chevrons were never worn. The titles fully titles given by Emerson are (keyed to the preceding posts):

#1. Master Engineer Senior Grade, Corps of Engineers, Transportation Corps, and Tank Corps.

#2. Master Engineer Junior Grade, Corps of Engineers and Transportation Corps.

#3. Quartermaster Sergeant Senior Grade, Corps of Engineers and Motor Transport Corps.

#4. Quartermaster Sergeant Junior Grade, Corps of Engineers and Motor Transport Corps.
