Plant#4 Posted October 4, 2012 #3 Posted October 4, 2012 These are really nice, and several different ones have been showing up on ebay over the last few years. They go for about 50-100 and up. I thought abought getting a few, but, not really my field of collecting. Not too sure where or when they come from, most likly ship's machine shop or some enterprising fellows in some of the ports. The ones I have been seeing appear to be cast. Check the completed listings.
skir Posted October 5, 2012 #4 Posted October 5, 2012 The 'original' of these were made in the foundry shop of NN Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. and will have this cast into the bottom of the ashtray. These were Alum. The Foundry also made these for the USS Forestall in Alum. The USS Coral Sea and Midway were cast in Brass . The Enterprise is the most common, Midway and the Coral Sea turn up every once in awhile and sell in this area, Tidewater Va. in the $200-250. range. The Forestall is the hardest to find and sold one for $400.00. Again, this is for the ones with the NNSB & DD C0. cast in the bottom. Any in the 50-100 dollar range are a steal.

So these are manufacturer's pieces, probably made to be given to key people associated with the construction of each carrier. Newport News Shipbuilding has a pretty impressive resume: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_News_...ing#Ships_built
hink441 Posted October 5, 2012 #7 Posted October 5, 2012 These are really cool. I have a Coral Sea ashtray. Please see this related threads. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...showtopic=81670 http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...howtopic=128906
skir Posted October 6, 2012 #8 Posted October 6, 2012 Here is the brass Coral Sea I have right now, pretty dirty. All of the NNSS&DD Co. made will have the logo in the bottom as is part of the mold. I have no idea who or where the ones with no logo came from and they do not bring the prices of the Shipyard made pieces. The presentation ones are the nicest, being polished and and engraved with the name of the Person given the ashtray.
hink441 Posted October 6, 2012 #9 Posted October 6, 2012 That brass Coral Sea ashtray is very nice!! Thanks for posting the pics. Chris
