The cemetery cover 130 acres. This is where lies the largest number of U.S. soldiers who died in Europe, with a total of 14,246. Most of those buried died during the Meuse-Argonne offensive during the First World War. The vast field of tombstones elève by rows rectangular upward beyond a wide central space to the chapel crowned. Bronze screen separates the chapel foyer from the interior, which is decorated with stained glass windows depicting the insignia of the U.S. units. Behind the altar are placed the flags of the allied nations.

Each side of the chapel are located memorial loggias. A panel of the western loggia contains a map of the offensive of the Meuse-Argonne. The remaining panels are inscribed the names of 954 missing Americans whose remains were never recovered or were not identified. Most of the dead American shipping in northern Russia in 1918-1919 are buried in this cemetery.
