Good evening all,

I would like to leave it to you to identify this strange pot.

It's painted in light grey - such as USN items - with US painted in black ; and has a trapezoidal slide on the back side, letting suppose that it's removable. It's 5.90" high and 3.15" in diameter.

I think it's a part of WWII ship top floor, such as smoke device pot, but it's a supposition ... it can be anything ;-)

I thank you in advance for your time and help.

Greetings,

Vertol

Maybe I should have written container ... it's perhaps too ambiguous :S

Pretty sure it is an ashtray (butt can). It should have a silver metal top that has a hole in the center and it slides into a holder that is on a wall or bulkhead. Had similar item on board the sub I was on in the 70's. Not sure if it is Navy though but could be.

Yes, it is a good old US Navy Butt Kit. (Ashtray for you non nautical types). And as stated it should have a silver indented top with a hole in the center. In the Good Old Days, on Surface ships, these things were mounted on the bulkheads about every 2 feet  There was a bracket that was bolted to the bulkhead and then the kit was slid into it. Along with butts, these things also collected bits and pieces of trash and when some one close was trying to quit smoking (fat chance when the entire Navy smoked everywhere except the fuel tanks and magazines) they would fill with Sun Flower Seed Shell. Al of which when mixed with a lit cigarette butt, made for a nice dense fog in the passageway, much like our home land (the bars of Subic). It was a nice "Homey" touch

Steve,

How often did you have to have yours emptied??

Oddly enough, When I was on a precom ship in 93 they were still mounting the " V " bracket on the bulkheads of new ships.

Then the shipyard worker would deliver a few cases of the ashtrays. Since smoking was now limited to a small area of the fantail or a break area - all of the ships would decline the boxes of ashtrays. Thus the shipyard got to check delivered.

Never could figure out why whoever drew up the plans had these guys mount the " V " bracket if they knew this was happening...

Not sure I ever saw one of these things emptied. I think the contents either just burned up over time or "returned to Nature" through the natural process of decomposition. Most of them smelled like it any way ;)

Hello,

I thank you all, guys ; I though it was difficult, but no :D

However, I'm lucky a lot of you have known these ashtrays !

Now, the difficulty is to determine the period, but it's another story (I hope WWII for my navyman ^^) ... I just know the guy from who it come from, have had it for nearly 30 years.
