JDK Posted September 27, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2012 Here's a small jacket group to a A-36/P-51 Dive Bomb/Fighter pilot. I've had this set for quite some time, but haven't done alot of research on it. The 311th was one of only 3 groups in the war to use the A-36 dive bomb version of the P-51. They are flew fighter sweeps as well as escort. The group spent most of July and August 1944 operating from Tingkawk Sakan, Burma, helping to support Merrill's Marauders (amongst others). It was then transferred to China and to the Fourteenth Air Force, remaining there until the end of the war. In China it performed a similar mix of fighter and fighter-bomber missions.Group

Glad you like it. It's been fun revisiting these groupings while posting them on the forum lately. I've got quite a few to go. My goal is to get 2 or 3 groups up a month if time permits. doyler Posted September 27, 2012 Share #10 Posted September 27, 2012 Thats another beauty JD. I like how they put a zipper in the interior for a pocket on the flag.Have seen the flags/chits used as pockets before but the zipper is a nice touch. JGC Posted September 27, 2012 Share #14 Posted September 27, 2012 Your going to make us wait a week or two between groupings, that's just not fair. Great jacket, love the scarf. Can we get a shoot of the 14th patch on the left shoulder? Thanks for sharing Jon
JDK Posted September 27, 2012 Author Share #15 Posted September 27, 2012 "I've had this set for quite some time, but haven't done alot of research on it."Oh, that we were all so busy! Great stuff! Not so much busy as it is this particular fighter group is very difficult to research. There just is not alot of in depth information on them. I found a couple sites on the web, but I would love to find some kind of unit history book. The site I linked above is the most in depth that I have found. Can we get a shoot of the 14th patch on the left shoulder? Thanks for sharing Jon Sorry Jon! Finding the time to take photos is the most difficult. Many are also stored in safe keeping so I have to get them unpacked, take the photos, and then re-pack them. I'm not sure if I took any closeups of the 14th patch before putting it back but if I did, I will add it. I also forgot to photograph the correspondance and shipment receipts from when this group was purchased :pinch: . I love the scarf too!! JD

Johnny Signor Posted October 1, 2012 Share #23 Posted October 1, 2012 I assume you know that the jacket patch is for the 529th Fighter Bomber Squadron of the 311th Group , they were also a regular Bombardment Squadron which was the 383rd and used the same emblem . Stony Posted April 29, 2014 Share #25 Posted April 29, 2014 Love this group as I have always liked the A-36 Apache. I got to meet the only A-36 ace Mike Russo a few times before he passed away in 06'.
