cap_george Posted September 27, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2012 At a flea market I bought a French made WW1 lighter with an American Eagle on one side and a Female on the other. The dealer gave me these stripes (may have been the owner of the lighter).
Lee Ragan Posted September 27, 2012 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2012 These are chevrons for: "Chief Trumpeter, 1902-1916 or Sergeant Bugler, 1916-1917. Originally, chief trumpeters were only in mounted units (artillery & cavalry) but were added to the Coast Artillery in 1908. As a result of the National Defense Act of Army reorganization, the chevron was retitled sergeant bugler, that grade then being authorized for engineers as well as cavalry and artillery. The chevron, which was made in pairs, was dropped in December 1917, although the title of sergeant bugler was restored in May 1918".. quoted from "CHEVRONS", By LTC William K. Emerson. Thats a great find and would be welcome in any chevron collection. Thanks for sharing.
