carrabassett Posted September 26, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 26, 2012 Picked this up recently and thought it was a neat lot of items to one guy. I haven't done much research on the officer, Peter J. Foss, Jr. so would appreciate any info. I can't find much info on the 3 certificates so they seem to be unusual. Wish I could read Vietnamese! The Brig General photo has a faded dedication "To Pete..." with signature of Harry ? If anyone has any additional info please let me know. Thanks in advance, Jim

memphismeister Posted September 27, 2012 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2012 The one on the right is the certificate for the VGC. If you use the google translator you can determine at which level it was given based on the star color. The one on the left is the Armed Forces Honor Medal, 1st Class I do beleive

seanmc1114 Posted September 29, 2012 Share #6 Posted September 29, 2012 LTC Peter J. Foss commanded the 1st Battalion 508th Infantry in Vietnam from 29 September 1969 until its redeployment to the U. S. in December 1969. He may have continued in command after returning to Fort Bragg, NC. Based on the dates on one of your awards certificates from January 1969, he was probably a major then serving as either the executive officer or a staff officer in the battalion. here is a picture of him as a LTC from the 3rd Brigade 82nd Airborne Division 1969 yearbook. seanmc1114 Posted September 29, 2012 Share #8 Posted September 29, 2012 LTC Peter J. I can't seem to edit my own post, so I'll just reply to it. Per the unit's Vietnam yearbook, LTC Foss was the executive officer of the 3rd Brigade 82nd Airborne Division from 16 June 1969 to 29 September 1969 and CO of the 1st Battalion 508th Infantry from 29 September until the battalion redeployed from Vietnam in December 1969. According to the bio I posted above, he extended his tour and commanded a battalion in the Americal Division after the 82nd went home. After looking back at the "Ghiay Khen" certificate above, I think the dates (01/10/69 den 01/11/69) are October 1, 1969 to November 1, 1969 instead of January 10-11, 1969 as I originally thought. That makes more sense with his assignment to the 1/508th. Three of his brothers and a sister all served in the Army including his brother, John Foss, who retired as a four star general and whose commands included the 3d Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division; the United States Army Infantry School and Fort Benning; the 82nd Airborne Division; the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg; and Commanding General, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Foss
