Vincennes Posted September 20, 2012 #1 Posted September 20, 2012 Here are a couple neat photos of a damaged Navy ship. These are 8x10" photos that are glued to the front and back of a 8.5x11" piece of stiff paper. I am guessing they are both of the same ship, but there is nothing written on the paper or photos, so I do not know. I am also guessing they are WW2 vintage from the clothing of the civilians in the photos. I also include an enlargement of the two officers in the center of the landscape oriented photo. The one on the left looks like Oliver North, but I know it is not him. Can anybody provide any clues as to the type of ship? Or date? Thanks, Paul
Vincennes Posted September 20, 2012 Author #3 Posted September 20, 2012 And here is a close up of the two officers. Paul
Dave Posted September 20, 2012 #4 Posted September 20, 2012 At first glance, the first photo almost looked like my father in laws ship, but the second photo shows it's obviously a logistics ship of some sort. Looks like it was either hit by an aerial bomb...perhaps a kamikaze? Interesting...
patches Posted September 21, 2012 #5 Posted September 21, 2012 Where is this photo taken? by the looks of the officers, one of them in the Gray uniform also the mingling civilians, it looks stateside, Bremerton maybe?
Jack's Son Posted September 21, 2012 #6 Posted September 21, 2012 I have always been impressed with the actual amount of damage a ship could take, and still stay afloat, let alone be repaired.
Sabrejet Posted September 21, 2012 #7 Posted September 21, 2012 Check out this one! It's LST-289, one of the vessels which fell victim to Kriegsmarine Schnell-boots during the ill-fated "Opertation Tiger" off the Devon coast in May '44. Despite suffering such catastrophic damage she managed to limp back to the safety of Dartmouth harbour.
Jack's Son Posted September 21, 2012 #8 Posted September 21, 2012 NOW.....that's what I'm talking about!! How did it get back home.
Sabrejet Posted September 21, 2012 #9 Posted September 21, 2012 LST-289 seen from a different angle. Her stern has been blown away by a torpedo.
Flashlarue Posted September 21, 2012 #10 Posted September 21, 2012 Photo #2 looks like the same hole from the reverse angle after the damaged upper deck had been removed for repairs.
Sabrejet Posted September 21, 2012 #11 Posted September 21, 2012 Unfortunately I can't identify this vessel except to say that she survived a direct hit by a Kamikaze during the invasion of Okinawa! :w00t:
