Can someone elighten me on this pouch, with brass rod as hinge on the bottom, and 20 loops for pistol ammo, and no obvious maker mark? I really have no clue the era and any details would be great! Obviously salty, but all there.

Thx in advance... Bob

This is not really the era I collect, but my Dad has several of these. It is a McKeever Cartridge Box used from the 1880s until approximately 1910. Since it is dyed black I would assume the loops are for 45/70 but it could be for 30/40 Krag. In the early 1900s, the cartridge box color changed from black to brown. These were worn in garrison as in the field cartridge/prairie belts were used. It is a little rough but it looks like it would clean up nicely.

Thx Ian... that get's me started. Does have the metal grommet on the closure too so I surmise a later version?
