.50 finds

I just got home from Myrtle beach, SC and thought I'd post some pics of my surprise finds from metal detecting. I was at Dunes Point North Myrtle beach right beside Apache pier if anyone knows where that is. Not what I was expecting to find. They look to be .50 cal. Anyone know if there was some kind of gunnery range there years ago? These weren't found directly on the beach but right behind the dunes, probably about 6 inches deep.

I know up at the Ft. Fisher/Kure Beach area of NC the beaches were used for gunnery practice for the Navy during the war. I found lots of shrapnel when I detected the beach but never found and rounds. I would assume Myrtle was the same way.

Great finds!

What kind of detector are you using? Can you post a link where you bought it from.

I've been wanting to do this as a hobby at old military bases for a while now.

The thing on the left looks like a little handle of some kind. I was using a Fisher 1212-X that I bought from Kellyco detectors years ago. It is a low end model but it works pretty decent. Detector technology is like desktop computer tech, advancing every year. I'm sure mine is outdated and there are better low end models now.

However the three .50 bullets got to where you found them, it apparently wasn't out of the barrel of a gun. They have no rifling marks on them.

Actually all three have rifling. They are hard to see in the pictures but if you look closely at the middle bullet you can make them out.
