Can Anyone Explain USS Currituck's Paint Scheme?

I assume this Wiki photo was actually taken at the time of her fitting-out at Philadelphia in 1944, but the camo scheme has a more of a 1950's Dr Stangelove look to it than anything I've seen in WWII.

My FIL served aboard her 1958-1961 and his children all remember her being painted Navy gray like every other vessel.

Google the name of this ship and click on "images" and you will find the official blueprints for this scheme. Monogram/Revell just reissued the old model kit of the seaplane tender and I was curious about the use of this type of Measure. It appears that the U.S.S. Currituck was the only one of her class to actually carry this scheme into the Pacific.
