LostDutchman Posted August 1, 2012 #1 Posted August 1, 2012 I had a customer bring this in wanting to know it's value. I really have no experience in this kind of piece so I was going to post it here and see if anyone had an idea. she said her dad and the guys on his sub could "send off" and have these made. I assume just post war... Thoughts?
MWalsh Posted August 1, 2012 #2 Posted August 1, 2012 I know that there are some serious sub collectors here on the Forum, I know sub battle flags get discussed every now and then. I do recall that there are a fair number of veteran / reunion type made flags out there, in fact, one can order and purchase such related things as your flag even today. There are also out and out fakes, and then of course wartime original smaller flags like this too. What the family member said about getting them or ordering them in is probably spot on correct, and thus would indicate post war. Value? Tough to tell, I guess it'll be hard to say, one never knows what a sub collector or family member of a crew member may want to or be willing to pay. Yours looks pretty nice, fully embroidered design, great details. I will wait for others to weight in with more details. You may want to send a message to vintageproductions here on the Forum, I think Bob has experience with these. MW
Jack's Son Posted August 1, 2012 #3 Posted August 1, 2012 I agree with MW. That beauty represents A LOT of $$$$$.!
LostDutchman Posted August 2, 2012 Author #4 Posted August 2, 2012 I'd like to make a fair offer on the piece. This is WAY outside of my area of experience. Does anyone have any kind of pricing guidance on a piece like this?
topdcnut Posted August 2, 2012 #5 Posted August 2, 2012 Something about it says China late war or post, with everything on it, it would appear to have been done for someone with intimate knowlege of the boats record. I especially like the fact that they took on a light house and a radar installation with their deck gun. I would look at which of the asian ports this boat visited late in the war or just after.
Austin R Posted August 2, 2012 #6 Posted August 2, 2012 Here is one on antique roadshow that is appraised. You can read about the transcript and watch the video. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200805A04.html
