"The Battle of Beltring"

Hello peeps! Just got back from the big (as in "massive") "War & Peace" show at Beltring, Kent, England. After a week of uncertainty due to the horrendously wet weather experienced by the UK/Europe, the weather improved dramatically, the sun shone, temperatures rose and thankfully the hitherto sodden ground soon dried out and firmed up...so much so that by Sunday, Beltring was its usual dusty self. That said, there were a few areas here and there which had been churned up by hundreds of wheels and tracks, but not enough to prevent the show from going on in its normal manner.

Each day there are non-stop displays of vehicles in the main arena. Nowhere else on earth will you see so many wheeled and tracked vintage military vehicles in one place and moving under their own power! There was over 1000 of them covering acres of fields...all immaculately restored, including many rare ones. The arena display always culminates in a mock-battle between the US Army (ie the good guys) and the Wehrmacht (the bad guys). This year, a "set" was built in the arena representing a bombed-out village which was to be defended by the Germans...and ultimately taken by the Americans. Many armored vehicles took part including Pz IIIs, STUGs, Sdkfz 232s, M36 TDs, M8s, M3s and various Jeeps and trucks etc. The participants were pretty much all British. Prodigious amounts of blank ammo was expended and a jolly good time was had by all! At the end, "Oddball" (from Kelly's Heroes) injected a little wit and humour. I hope the following pics convey the flavour of the event. Enjoy!
