cwnorma Posted January 25, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2008 Matt, Unfortunately, just as in WW1 gas masks, non vulcanized rubber, once it goes stiff is practically impossible to get flexible again. There was a similar discussion about how to make a WW1 Gas Mask soft again, and there we discussed how some people say that soaking old rubber in mineral oil works to a certain extent, but I do not reccomend it. All you end up with is an oily mess. Chris Fellows I have a pair of Korean War era Chinese rubber Tennis shoes They are stiff and flat I would really like to make them more displayable-any ideas? rayg Posted January 26, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 26, 2008 I have used a hair dryer to soften and expand a couple of the US rubber rifle grenade butt pads. They had shrunk and the rubber had hardend and there was no way they would slip over the rifle butt. The hair dryer softened the rubber to the extent that I could slip the pad on. Not sure but I think that when ever I remove the pad, it will shrink back. If you do try a hair dryer on the shoes, once you get them back in shape, make sure you block them up so they retain that shape, Ray
