hirsca Posted July 6, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2012 Estate sale find today. From the same estate as the 16th FIS Alfred E. Newman patch. Hey, I'm sorry, but I'm a Navy guy---did they really use these while flying? Thanks, Al Hirschler in Dallas.

Steindaddie Posted July 6, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 6, 2012 These "Whiz Wheels" are actually easy to use and I always had one tucked in my helmet bag. On a C-130, even with the on-board SCNS (Self-Contained Navigation System) computer, it was often quicker to make an airspeed computation with a whiz wheel rather than scroll through the computer to the applicable page. northcoastaero Posted July 6, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 6, 2012 I believe that some U.S. naval aviation pilots and flight officers still use these along with other items and pocket checklists in their nav bag. The nav bags were made by the parachute riggers and were made from red, black, or other colors of vinyl and later olive drab and sage green nylon.
