38Driver Posted December 2, 2015 Share #78 Posted December 2, 2015 USS West Virginia. BB-48. Rose from the ashes of Pearl Harbor and scored a direct hit on her first salvo the first time she had a Japanese BB in her sights.
338thRCT Posted January 30, 2016 Share #79 Posted January 30, 2016 Picked this photograph up today with some other Navy photos. I think they were from the Korean War era. Is this the USS West Virginia?
Salvage Sailor Posted January 30, 2016 Share #80 Posted January 30, 2016 Yes, it is the USS WEST VIRGINIA (BB-48) in mothballs at Puget Sound (Bremerton) prior to scrapping. Alongside is one of her sister ships, either USS COLORADO (BB-45) or USS MARYLAND (BB-46) in the mid-1950's
CW4AFB Posted January 30, 2016 Share #81 Posted January 30, 2016 I think I'd have to add my vote for the Texas---she escorted the 29th Infantry Division to France twice----once in 1918 and then again in June 1944 to a beach in Normandy.... P-40Warhawk Posted January 30, 2016 Share #82 Posted January 30, 2016 I think I'd have to add my vote for the Texas---she escorted the 29th Infantry Division to France twice----once in 1918 and then again in June 1944 to a beach in Normandy.... Being a survivor of the old 'dreadnaught' era battleships, the Texas is one of my favorites too. A friend of mine had a named uniform from her in 1918, which is the only WWI wartime uniform I have seen from a Texas crewman. She graciously donated it back to the ship; what a reunion! Hopefully it is on display by now.
1SG_1st_Cav Posted January 31, 2016 Share #83 Posted January 31, 2016 USS Massachusetts! She sits under the Braga Bridge that sits over the Taunton River in Fall River Massachusetts. I lived about 2 miles from her for nearly 9 years. We've been aboard her several times.
Corporal Kang 0311 Posted February 2, 2016 Share #84 Posted February 2, 2016 U.S.S. North Carolina BB 55 ...Amazing ship and history. Anyone keeping count of who has the most votes??
RustyCanteen Posted February 11, 2016 Share #85 Posted February 11, 2016 I started to count the 'votes', but some of the comments centered more around the ship than stating it was their 'favorite'. So..I guess they all 'won'.
Redleg13a Posted March 21, 2016 Share #86 Posted March 21, 2016 338thRCT, thanks for posting the photo of the West Virginia. I'm not going to say she's my favorite BB, but I do think she and California had great figures after their rebuild from Pearl Harbor. Love the way they rebuilt them with the compact superstructures. I wonder many changes were done below decks?
38Driver Posted March 21, 2016 Share #87 Posted March 21, 2016 Can't argue with how powerful and beautiful at the same time the WeeVee looked after her rebuild.
mikie Posted June 3, 2016 Share #88 Posted June 3, 2016 Lots of great ships named here. Tough to choose just one. The already named Oregon and Hartford are about the top of my list. It makes me sick knowing that the Hartford actually existed until scrapped a year before I was born! To name one that nobody has named here yet, I'll put in USS Tyler. Some of those Civil War conversions were pretty strange looking ships, but man, what service they gave. Her fighting toe to toe with Arkansas was a good example. Thor996 Posted June 4, 2016 Share #89 Posted June 4, 2016 Have to be the USS Indianapolis CA-35 - ever since I first heard and read her story, I have been fascinated with all things Indy. Reading her story and the the stories of the survivors and what they endured and went through really resonated with me. I have read multiple books and multiple articles and anything I can get my hands on about this storied tragic ship. I have a few newsletters from the ship 1930's and 1940's and they are the most treasured items in my military collection..... May her crew rest in peace of God's loving arms forever. This photo is the Indianapolis off Saipan June 1944 as seen from the CL-62 USS Birmingham.
aerialbridge Posted June 8, 2016 Share #90 Posted June 8, 2016 The USS California, aka "The Prune Barge", (BB-44). Re-floated and rebuilt from the muck of Pearl Harbor to deliver pay-back.
