Here is the insignia for the DSRV Mystic Class 1 and was launched in San Diego, CA on 24 January 1970. Testing culminated in an operational evaluation that saw a complete, simulated submarine rescue mission. DSRV-1 was named Mystic during the Fleet Acceptance Ceremonies in 1977.

Cool!

How gutsy is that to take a craft down to a stricken submarine deep underwater! I can imagine a number of hazards, including explosions and radiation.

Other than research, I hope they never have to use one of these for real.

CNY Militaria

Check out the movie "Gray Lady Down" with Charleton Heston. Good examples of this in use!

I believe if you read Blind Mans Bluff, and Red November the whole "rescue" thing was more a secondary/cover story for these, I think they were used mainly for espionage stuff.

A good vessel to have in the back pocket for rescues, but probably far more valuable for other missions...

Gray Lady Down, very good movie, a bit cheesy, but for its time, it was very cool....also the DSRV was used in Hunt For Red October...
