Chaps, Any good websites around for vehicle Markings ??

One of our chaps is doing up a Dodge, could do with Info on what markings go with what unit etc, where on the vehicle, colours, stencils etc

So any good links think.gif

Possibly 101st (already talked him out of 506th  )

But not decided yet

Hi mate is he going to go for total 100% authenticity and correctness or just a vehicle assumption...

also what sort of Dodge....WC51/52/62 or 63

or other i.e command car ?

as that will determine what markings you can mark it up as

Its a WC51

I think he wants it right, hes getting pretty stuck into it, got all sorts of parts on the way, replacing this that and the other. Seems to know what hes doing mechanically, but needs some help with the history.

Hes restored vehicles before, but is quite new to re-enactment.

Just remember, Parachute Infantry Companies had no proper vehicles....

Vehicles of the Regts belonged to either HQ or Service Companies....

101AB-506I * E-5 is fantasy!!!!!

Posted

OK !! Thanks Johan...you beat me to it........

In the T and OE for an Airborne Unit a WC51 would have only served in

Service Company.....so there fore it would have had 1A-101I....star...SV- 6...6th vehicle service company 101st Airborne

or they were marked per individual PIR .............. 101A/B-506 PIR.......star......SV-2

Medical detatchment ........ had 3 of them

Signal Section.................. had 3 of them

Ordanance Section............had 2 of them

so did Military police for the Mechanic (1)

not very glamourous i know...but that is FACT

so unfortunatley to be correct all these 30 and 50 cal equipped radio equipped loaded with war painted Mohican paras all singing all dancing Dodges marked up as E 506 are WRONG on a huge scale.

Yes i didn't think there would be any in the PIRs, which is what we have told him.

Would not the 327th have any ?

What would the markings be for the medical ones ?

Posted

Hi mate...nope only the service companies or the support units named above.

Cant really see how you get a WC51 in a C-47 but there you go..... ermm.gif

Medical detactchments would have been marked

101A/B-326M.........star.....Med or (M)-1 thru 3

ps i just brought another carbine..an M1A1...... thumbsup.gif

off we go again ;)

Lloyd

PS now this isnt to say they never "borrowed" vehicles once on the ground...with hastily applied markings..but its not technically correct

It's always best to base the markings on a WW2 photograph....

That avoids any discussions along the way!

Yes pictures are the best Provenance, Anybody got any ?

Medical is probably a good choice, as we have people and stuff to go with that, and a Dodge ambulance as well.

101A/B-326M.........star.....Med or (M)-1 thru 3

(not completely understanding this ?)

Posted

Bumper markings buddy....looking from front....

left side...101A/B- 326 M right side (star) -M-1(or MED-1) depending on individual vehicle number

M designation is medical....that any clearer

Posted

Yep as Erwin says Recon Company HQ Platoon had 1 WC51/52 issued to it.

As per T and OE 18-35 May 1943 for an SP TD battalion

Seeing as we dont have a tank destroyer in the group crying.gif

Everybody has their kit done as 101st (various) so it fits better if the Dodge is as well.

If it was me who'd just bought one, then I'd be doing it 359th. thumbsup.gif

359th Infantry....?

who does the 359th Infantry regiment ?

Right we like the Marking as suggested by Lloyd, so next question, from the owner =

Would we need a red cross anywhere or just the usual star on the bonnet with serial number (I have managed to find the vehicles ORIGINAL US serial number so may go with that unless the serial number has to be specific to the 326th)

What do we think

Red cross ?

Serial number ?

Posted

Nope ol mate usual star and serial number arrangement for the Dodge..

NO specific number for 326th as the numbers were put on at factory NOT the field

what i used to do with mine was get 2 cheap red cross flags.....and tie them to the sides of the canvas tilt at the back to denote medical vehicles...not the cheap poly ones but cotton ones washed in tea to stain them down and bingo.

You could paint 2 smal square red crosses on the windshield skin if you wanted each side so they could be seen from the front

because WC51/52 were used as ambulances aswell

Hope this helps

White markings on either end of bumpers, whats that about ?

When was it done, when was it not ?

Gliderinf,

Have you checked over at the Steel Soldiers site? I've been on a few sites and, at least with the '50s era M-37, the SN is usually the frame number and the registration number is a sequencial number given by the service that gets the truck. There is a registry for the M-37s at the G741 site so you can see that the SN and registration/hood number are pretty independent of each other. I don't know if other vehicle sites maintain any other registry of sorts, I think it is a great idea myself. Definitely helps out with tracing the history. Unfortunately, as I understand, the military destroys records of vehicles after a period once they leave service so there is not way to go back and request historical data.

If you are referring to the white "tips" on the bumpers then I don't know though I have seen then them on some vehicles (usually MP or other vehicles not up front) but not many. Seems to be a way a "dressing up" a vehicle for visibility.

BTW, nice website.

Posted

White tips on the bumpers was a "blackout" restriction for vehicles serving in England during WW2.....most were painted out as soon as the vehicle reached a combat theatre.

816***** is the Dodge chassis number i think?

BTW, nice website. thumbsup.gif

My book lists the 8 numbers as the serial number and the 2 numbers as "US Government Registration No. and its the 2 that goes on the hood.

Unfortunately it only list up to just before the numbers in question :(

As advised ;) going without white tips (it's funny, theyre very much like those used on Vehicles of the Gross Deutchland, think.gif )

Thanks chaps, thumbsup.gif

I think we know what we're doing now, but if anyone does come across any photos, would love to see first hand referance for the unit. :D

(God i wish i was painting my own crying.gif )
