Battleships and Cruisers MTO & ETO .

Taking Sigsaye's cue on my earlier question on Capital Ships in the MTO and ETO, I gathered together the individual ships that served at one time or another against the Germans and copied them here for your viewing pleasure.

Two Carriers, Nine Battleships and Thirteen Cruisers both Heavy and Light ( I know Cruisers are not catogorized as Capital Ships, but the are very important large Warships and merit mentioning here) as Steve pointed out these vessels would move to the Pacific, but as we see some served their entire service in the Atlantic.

If I have missed any please do add.

I think you have left out Escort Carriers (CVE).

Yeah, but no I havn't forgotten, I was going to look into that down the line :w00t: I need a little time to look around and copy them, should I do the Destroyers first ? :D nah the ecort carriers first, maybe I'll start tommorow.

"Man our Navy was hugh in those days. " Yes, I believe I read where we had 1100 destroyers of all types during the war. I'm assuming this in DD, DE, DMS, DML, possibially the old Four Stack, Flush Deckers that were converted to Amphibious assault. Yep, lots of iron out there. I read "US Navy Destroyer operations in WW 2", and there were pages of them listed in the back.

Here are the Destroyers, 156 in all served at one point or another in the war in Europe, whether nearer to this hemisphere or as far away as the Barents Sea. The amount is large, as for Destroyer Escorts that served in the War against Germany at one time or another, I gather one would have to nearly double the amount of that which is for the Destroyers.

That's a lot of work!

If you mean me copying and pasting these links, that's nothing compared to the work these Tin Can men did on the high seas and up in close to hostile enemy shores :w00t:

At last the last installment, as we can see there was alot of Destroyers going back and forth across the Atlantic and around the Atlantic, this would also mean innumerable Destroyer Escorts, Minesweepers, and a host of ocean going Landing Vessels, Transports of every description, even down to little ocean going Tugs or Fleet Tugs.

Patches, beauty job on that post, man. You did yeoman's commendation work on compiling that list of cruisers that saw duty in both ETO and PTO. But, I have to correct one omission on a destroyer that I've done a bit of research on owing to caretaking medal tangible of one of her decorated heros. I realize that your list of DDs includes just destroyers that saw ETO duty and not those that also were in PTO.

But here's one that needs to be included in your list, since it not only saw duty in the ETO-- D-Day Utah Beach, among four other Europe/Med battle stars-- but after conversion to a DMS, saw major, extreme action as an Okinawa Invasion picket. Four suicide planes splashed in one hour and surviving what should have been a KO by a 250 pounder that broke through as one plane disintegrated at the hands of her gunners . I'll let the extensive wiki that I mostly wrote cover the rest for any interested in further reading.

And after all this amazing tin can saw and survived in WW2, its completely avoidable and catastrophic peacetime destruction and carnage a few years later is all the more gut-wrenching.

To the USS Hobson and her men...... And the start of your list of DD's that saw duty in both Europe and the Pacific in WW II.
