AAF_Collection Posted June 1, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2012 Thanks for posting the details John. Although I no longer collect Vietnam era items I'll be ordering a copy as the subject of military artwork interests me in general. Matt.
sighgone Posted June 1, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted June 1, 2012 Thanks for posting the details John. Although I no longer collect Vietnam era items I'll be ordering a copy as the subject of military artwork interests me in general. Matt. I understand that there is a substantial following in Britain of things relating to the VN War: books, aircraft, modelers, uniform patches, etc., is this correct? I might be traveling to Ireland next year and was wondering if any of the museums in England would be interested in a photo book of helicopter nose art? Sabrejet Posted June 1, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 1, 2012 I understand that there is a substantial following in Britain of things relating to the VN War: books, aircraft, modelers, uniform patches, etc., is this correct? I might be traveling to Ireland next year and was wondering if any of the museums in England would be interested in a photo book of helicopter nose art? The IWM Aviation Museum at Duxford (Britain's finest and home of the American Air Museum) has an excellent bookshop selling all manner of aviation-related titles. That would be a very good outlet for your forthcoming book IMHO. http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford

I might be traveling to Ireland next year and was wondering if any of the museums in England would be interested in a photo book of helicopter nose art? You are correct there is a good deal of interest in the Vietnam war over here, and I'm sure certain museums would be interested in your book. For starters I'd suggest the following... The Helicopter Museum at Weston super Mare http://www.helicoptermuseum.co.uk/ (they do have a VN vet Huey in their collection). The Imperial War Museum,Duxford http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford (edit to add Ian beat me to it while I was typing!) The Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop http://www.armyflying.com/ And I'm sure these guys would be interested! http://www.huey.co.uk/ Matt. sighgone Posted June 2, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted June 2, 2012 Matt is bang-on with the Helicopter Museum and the British Army's rotary wing school!! I will definitely get my publisher to start talking to these overseas museums for sure. Thanks for the heads up on this book market for VN War related media. My first book, "U.S. Army Helicopter Names In Vietnam", came out last year but I don't believe the foreign markets know that much about it. Go to Hellgate Press for more info and you can order thru them also. Now, what should my third helicopter book be about, any suggestions?

River Patrol Posted June 4, 2012 Share #12 Posted June 4, 2012 Can you show us a few interior pages or describe the content more explicitly? snake36bravo Posted September 12, 2012 Share #15 Posted September 12, 2012 I've got tons of nose art. I use them for 3D model textures. I can finally, FINALLY get the tail numbers of Trick or Treat right. The 11th ACR were not receptive to any of my requests. Just like to add Amazon has a take a look inside for this right now. Fantastic effort! I would love to help out on the 2nd volume. There are a lot of names with images that could be added. As is, a superb reference!!!
sighgone Posted September 19, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted September 19, 2012 Thanks snake36bravo for the kind words about the new book. You hit on the subject of a Vol 2 which is very possible. The main ingredients needed are colorful, close-up pics of nose art, in-country Army helicopters from Vietnam War, image never before published, permission to publish from the photo owner, and detailed data about crew or copter. The publisher says if enough pics become available to fill a subsequent book he will issue the green light for VOL II. My gut says it is a hard act to follow but who knows. Maybe the success of the Art book will bring dozens of new contributors and new pics to the project. I'll keep my fingers crossed until then. sighgone Posted September 26, 2012 Author Share #19 Posted September 26, 2012 Beezman, the 1st printing had 2,000 copies. Sold out all within five weeks. Word is spreading rather quickly. My first book, "U.S. Army Helicopter Names In Vietnam" (Hellgate Press, 2011) was a print-on-demand (POD) publication which was a different process all together. snake36bravo Posted September 30, 2012 Share #20 Posted September 30, 2012 Thanks snake36bravo for the kind words about the new book. You hit on the subject of a Vol 2 which is very possible. Maybe the success of the Art book will bring dozens of new contributors and new pics to the project. I'll keep my fingers crossed until then. I have 684 nose art images in one folder alone sorted by unit in my external drive with additional nose art in various other folders, jump drives and between two systems. I've been researching them myself since I joined PEO Aviation 6 years ago. Most have enough detail though as a historian more research is always possible on the crew or tail numbers through the VHPA Goldbook. Some of these you have already published though there are many, many more that aren't published to date. They also range by helicopter type. I also have sorted folders full of helmet and rocket pod artwork. 117th Sidewinders 'Aquarian Effort' 60588 stopping over at Nha Bhe, RVN 70-71. Image courtesy of Dick Leonhardt. sighgone Posted October 2, 2012 Author Share #22 Posted October 2, 2012 According to my count WIDOW MAKER is #3 among all in-country Army helicopter names. Also, GRIM REAPER comes in at #6 within the top ten names in VN. Can you guess the other copter top ten names? I've made a listing of the top 25 names and the top 25 most prolific naming copter units during the VN War. My curiosity wanted to compare WWII airplane names to VN War helicopter names which resulted in some surprises.

sighgone Posted October 18, 2012 Author Share #25 Posted October 18, 2012 Now that we have books covering VN War Helicopter Nose Art, Gun Truck Art, and Zippo Lighter Art, the final three subjects yet to be explored are Short-Timer Calendar Art, Army Helicopter Unit/Platoon Markings and Flight Helmet Art. Are there other subjects that should be explored as well? Time is always an huge element to be considered when researching VN War subjects. The veterans population from the VN conflict is entering a critical phase regarding projected lifespan, and would be wise for VN War researchers to make this fact paramount in their research timeline. In other words......get cracking now before we are all gone.
