Volunteer for a mission/Or get out of a mission

I knew a Soldier in the 187th RCT in Korea who changed places with someone who wanted to go out on a mission. On that mission the entire team was killed.

 

I knew a Soldier who didn't want to deploy to Desert Storm. He got out of it, but then died in a car wreck coming back from his sons ball game.

 

Is there something to the idea that a mission could be your last?

 

I knew someone who likened it to the idea of taking a lottery ticket when he deployed. Your number comes up and there is nothing you can do about it.

 

For me, I live like Stonewall Jackson's remark in God's and Generals.
