In Forum member "General Apathy" 's great reference book "Doughboy to G.I.", there is a shot of a squad of guys suited up in these, with 'flaged faces and covered M17A1 Helmets. Yours was probably taken on the same day.

In your photo, as well as the other, this Suit is fully reversible camo on both sides, and has 2 pockets on the green side instead of the 1-on-each-side on the camo-to-O.D. Suits. Also interesting is that it has plastic buttons on the pockets, and "donut" steel buttons on the front closure.

Thanks for posting- the various 'flage-to-O.D. versions of these experimental Jungle Suits are plenty scarce, but this one is something else

Great pic! Others can also be found in the Shelby Stanton WW2 book. The camo cover just doesn't work on an M-1917A1 does it?! But on an M-1...a wholly different matter!!

Ian that kooky cover was actually an experimental Camoflage Shower Cap that didn't take, so they put it to other uses.

This isn't the first time I've posted this Suit, but it's the closest thing I know of to the one in the top photo. It's another one of the Army's 1942 experimental variants.

As I said, I've seen at least 3 of the Jackets below in my lifetime, but never one like you've posted.

Sam-

The fabric is 'flage-printed on one side, and Olive Drab #5 on the other. There were also samples of this O.D.-to-camo combination with the tan "beach" camo instead of the jungle colors, as well as the other experimental patterns; one of our members recently pulled one from a Salvation Army outlet:

Another example, this one a Smock...

The pocket layout on these- a slanted front patch pocket on front and a square patch on the rear at the opposite side, mirrored on the reverse side- is identical to the Marine Corp's 1942 'flage Trousers. The MCEB evidently went for this design, whereas the AGF modified their Jungle Suits with flap closures on all the pockets.

A view of the back; in these 2 shots, you can see the outline of the pockets on the reverse side.

And to think the Germans were 5 years ahead of this when the pictures were taken.

I remembered reading this thread a while back and wanting to share some photos of a set I found a few years ago now. I purchased from the original owners son he had hunted in one of the jackets for years and it even had deer blood on it. The pieces were really very special and fully reversible with many cool details. Ive included some of the pictures I took. Apologies for not great full photos these must've been all I had taken.
