aerialbridge Posted May 18, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 18, 2012 The only West Coast Battleship Museum will be opening for visitors on July 7, 2012, after the LA Harbor commission approved the lease terms yesterday, 5/17/12. Here is the website link for the organization that will be operating the Iowa museum. http://www.pacificbattleship.com/ Iowa has been undergoing a $7 mil. restoration in Northern California at Richmond, with $3 mil. donated by Iowa residents. San Diego has had the storied carrier USS Midway (CV-41) as a museum ship for the past few years, and nice that San Pedro (LA)/Long Beach that at one time was a significant navy town will be hosting this historic battleship for years to come. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/18/...E84H01320120518 http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/61d.htm
Jack's Son Posted May 18, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 18, 2012 I saw the Missouri when she visited San Diego after being recommissioned, and there is nothing like the silhouette of a battleship to stir the heart.
collectsmedals Posted May 20, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 20, 2012 I went on board USS Iowa when it docked across from my ship (USS Nimitz) at pier 12 in Norfolk VA back in 1982. I was a very impressive ship.
gunbarrel Posted May 21, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 21, 2012 This knife in my collection belonged to one of her sailors during WWII. I wish I knew who he was.

aerialbridge Posted July 22, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted July 22, 2012 To borrow a phrase, "Now that's a knife" You should be able to trace (or some good fellow reading this with great on-line research tools) your knife-- you've got his initials "CHM" and that he was a "Boatswain's Mate 2nd cl.", so with the muster rolls from the Big Stick for WW2, you should have it. Good luck!
