MWalsh Posted May 13, 2012 #1 Posted May 13, 2012 This set has been in my collection for about 10 years, it has been one of the nicest groupings I have and a centerpiece. The DSC is numbered but I understand that this medal number is part of a small block which there are no attribution records for though. However, it is nicely name engraved and thus attributable. He was KIA in September 1918 while serving with the 27th Division in France. The engraving is super on it! I know who it belonged to and all the details, so I never did any more research on it other than what I found and have noted in the small display. I suspect that I could fairly easily tie the number to him with a small amount of research though. I got it from family, no other paper or anything else exists, I have asked over the years but nothing else has ever been located nor is anything else believed to exist. In light of my recent WW1 DSC acquisition as shown here http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...howtopic=142416 I will be moving this 27th Division set to the trade stand here on the Forum. Hate to do it, but one cannot keep it all - believe me, I have tried I wanted to show it here first though, as I know not everyone goes through the sale and trade listings, and since it is nicely engraved and that is not all that common on these. Enjoy! MW

Boltaction Posted May 14, 2012 #20 Posted May 14, 2012 MW, you probably already know this, but just in case: September 29th 1918...that was THE jumping off date for the attack on the Hindenburg Line. The American 27th and 30th divisions were involved along with British and Australian units. The 27th had a particularly rough time of it. This was a very significant battle. You can be very proud of your relative/family(?). Coincidentally, like Cpl. DeRum, my grandad was also stringing phone lines during the exact same battle as part of the adjacent 30th Division!
