Bob Hudson Posted May 10, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 10, 2012 I had no idea there was a NAS in Olathe, interesting. It's now called New Century Aircenter and for a while was called Johnson County Industrial Airport. It's out I-35 at the New Century exit (Gardner). Many of the old Navy buildings were still there the last time I visited. They have an air show in July: http://kcghostsquadron.squarespace.com/
Johnny Signor Posted May 10, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 10, 2012 I think it goes back to WW2 , if memory serves me right thier older emblem had a American Indian design for the base insignia. Johnny

There's a wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Station_Olathe and it notes, "Future astronaut John Glenn was in the first class to be trained at the base and he was to make his first solo flight in a military plane from the base." hawkdriver Posted May 10, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2012 The primary hangar is still used by a Reserve Chinook unit. The hangar they use is on the national register as a haunted building. Very few people are willing to stay the night there. http://gardnernews.com/community-boasts-se...ting-hot-spots/
