hink441 Posted May 6, 2012 #1 Posted May 6, 2012 Guys I recently got this old battle lantern. It is made by Delta in Marion Ind and is made from aluminum. It is painted gray and is marked 4432-L-1 thru 4. I believe this might be a pre WW2 lantern or very early war, can anyone help in id'ing this lantern? Thanks for looking. Chris
hink441 Posted May 10, 2012 Author #2 Posted May 10, 2012 Does anyone have any info regarding the age and use of this type of lantern? Thanks. Chris
topdcnut Posted May 10, 2012 #3 Posted May 10, 2012 It may be mine related, I once had an aluminum flame safety lamp which turned out to be for use by coalmine foremen. It was a lot lighter than the brass ones used by the navy. I would look in the direction mine usage, which also means it could have seen shipboard usage.
hink441 Posted May 10, 2012 Author #4 Posted May 10, 2012 Well I found a guy who says this lantern is from the 1920-30s and is a USN lantern. He has some pictures and the one on the far left is a WW1 battle lantern. The lantern in the middle is a match to mine and he dates it to the 20-30s. This is his picture of his lanterns. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showth...lectric-Company His WW1 USN Lantern;
hink441 Posted May 11, 2012 Author #5 Posted May 11, 2012 I found some pictures of this type of battle lantern in use. The first picture is from 1927 onboard the USS T-3 (SS-61) submarine. This picture is in the control room and the lantern is mounted on the bulkhead. I know this isn't extremely exciting stuff but I like this often overlooked equipment. Chris The second group of pictures is the control room on board the USS Squalus SS-192 after she sank. These pictures were taken in 1939 after she was raised and salvaged.
