tarbridge Posted May 4, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2012 2nd Lt.Eugene W Maben Jr Birth:1919 Texas Home:Lubbock Co.Texas Pilot: P-47 Thunderbolt KIA: 18 October 1943 Location:Croix-lez-Rouveroy,rue du Village,Belgium The 358th Fighter arrived in Engalnd in July,1943 and were attached to the VIII Fighter Command. There primary mission was escorting B-17 and B-24 Heavy Bombers to and return flights over occupied Europe and Nazi Germany. They were almost daily engaged in air battles with Luftwaffe day interceptor aircraft escorting the heavy Bombers. Lt.Maben while flying a combat mission on 18 October,1943 was last seen spinning over enemy territory,it was impossible to conduct any extended search on the ground or the air. There were not any radio contacts with Wing Operations or Flight members indicating that he had trouble.Wartime reports suggests he suffered an oxygen failure. His Thunderbolt dived into soft clay and the engine was later found at a depth of five metres;Parts of Lt.Mabens P-47 were recovered on 20 March 1999. I would like to Honor Lt.Maben and his Sacrifice.R.I.P.Lt.Maben
