Sabrejet Posted April 24, 2012 Share #8 Posted April 24, 2012 Looks to be a British "Brodie" shell...the rivets which hold the strap loops in place appear to be split (?) and are therefore indicative of British manufacture. 1000s of these helmets were supplied to the AEF before American industry began producing the M1917 copy. aef1917 Posted April 24, 2012 Share #9 Posted April 24, 2012 It is indeed a British Mk. I shell. Probably 95% of the 28th helmets are painted on the side. There are those who think that the ones painted on the front were done pre-Armistice, but I haven't seen any concrete evidence to that effect. Too Much WW1 Militaria Posted April 24, 2012 Share #10 Posted April 24, 2012 The period pictures that I've seen all had the keystone on the side. I tend to lean the other way that the front-on keystones are post-war, based on the photos that I've seen. John
ww1collector Posted April 24, 2012 Share #11 Posted April 24, 2012 On the side is correct. Dave
