gunbarrel Posted April 19, 2012 #1 Posted April 19, 2012 Ran across these photos while looking for something else. Did a search and found none posted on the Forum; so, here they are. This particular MARS was lost in 1950, but the crew survived. For those that never heard of these flying ships, here is some info on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_JRM_Mars
Teamski Posted April 19, 2012 #10 Posted April 19, 2012 Awesome photos and a sad end indeed!!! Wow! -Ski
Steindaddie Posted April 19, 2012 #11 Posted April 19, 2012 Neat photos of a great old bird. Two JRM-1 Mars are still flying in an aerial firefighting outfit on Vancouver Island, Canada. I can see the island from my house and have on more than one occasion seen the Mars out for a drive. The company just spent big bucks upgrading the cockpits which means they will be flying the Mars for years to come. Here's a radioman's logbook showing his time with VR-2 in the Mars - some long flights there. He also has entries for the "Philippine Mars". This guy's logbook runs from October 1940 to December 1946, and in between he flew on just about every kind of navy patrol aircraft there was.

Steindaddie, The logbook and the fact that you can still see a couple of these birds flying is very cool. Thanks for sharing!
