hink441 Posted April 17, 2012 #1 Posted April 17, 2012 It was a great Navy day today. I went to a local antique store and found these. First is a WW2 black battle lantern. Second is a alarm bell with a pushbutton switch on it. The switch is labeled "S. P. TEL. CALL BELL", which I believe to be a sound powered telephone call bell. It is mostly brass and pretty heavy. Thanks for looking. Chris Before cleaning;
Corpl. Cleaver Posted April 17, 2012 #2 Posted April 17, 2012 I know where I can get a light exactly like that for $20, but it's the classic battle ship grey. Maybe I'll pic it up sometime. Cool finds.

Cool finds. This one was gray at one time but somewhere along the line it was painted black. I have a red one also, I have been unable to find a gray lantern yet. If you can get it for $20 bucks then that is a good deal. I paid around $25-$30 for my two. Here are my two.

That is a Sound Powered call bell. Probably from the main spaces where machinery noise would drown out the normal growler call sound. It would be extremely cool if you could somehow get that wired up to actually work!

That would be cool to wire it up. The power requirements on the tag are 115 VDC and .25 amps. I would have to hook up some batteries in series to get that amount of DC voltage. Chris

hink441 Posted April 18, 2012 Author #7 Posted April 18, 2012 I will have to see if I can find a converter if they exist. Anybody have some info ?? Will keep you updated. Chris
hink441 Posted April 20, 2012 Author #8 Posted April 20, 2012 I cleaned the alarm bell up a little bit. Here is a before and after shot. I am very pleased with the results. Chris Before; after;

Was that a dose of Never Dull and elbow grease? I need to do something along these lines. I got one of my ship's masthead lights. The picker (from the scrapyard) stripped the haze gray off, but it could use a little pick-me up on some spots. I'd have preferred to keep the weathered paint intact. I am going to wire them to 110v with a rheostat (dimmer) as well as mount the light to a nicely turned wooden base. I am also having an engraved brass plaque made to indicate where the light came from and the pertinent ship details. When I have it done, I'll post a new thread.
hink441 Posted April 20, 2012 Author #10 Posted April 20, 2012 That masthead light looks great just the way she is. I would really like to get one of those. Please keep us updated on her progress. I too wanted to keep the original paint but this alarm was really rough looking and must have had 6 coats of thick brushed on paint. The paint was chipped and worn unevenly, it just looked like a bad science experiment. In the end, I decided to strip her down to brass, and I am very pleased with the results.
