I randomly managed to add to my Corpsman collection with this tin of combat dressings for the US Navy. Two Tins made up a Unit 7 within a canvas bag. I am yet to find a bag... This came out of Thailand. Not mint at all, but never seen one in the UK. The tin is rammed with dressings 1943 dated. Quite incredible that it survived at all. These would have been used on beach landings; Normandy included I am sure. I enclose a photo of a Navy Corpsman aid area on Saipan with this tin being used. Crazy darn hobby....! . Hi Graham, a fabulous find, I have never seen one before either, unbelievable the condition of the bandages looking at the outside condition of the tin, looks like someone played football with it. !!!! so pleased for you. General Apathy Posted September 18, 2023 Share #24229 Posted September 18, 2023 . The Collins Museum . . . . . . . While the boys were here we went to the Collins museum near Blosville about six kilometres outside Ste Mere Eglise. This is the chateau that Eisenhower, Bradley and Collins used as a headquarters post D-Day. Philippe the owner has kept as much of the original interior as possible and filled it with locally found and sourced original memorabilia. It's possible to stand outside the historical entrance door where the three Generals stood in WWII, and also walk on the same original wooden parquet floor that they walked upon. This museum is definitely worth a visit, the boys were impressed with one display case which shows all the fantastic pieces found when digging out and laying the car park, with room after room of displays. Hi LtRGFrank, Scarecrow, mbec, grave creek, Johan, McDUFF, Mikie, Thanks for the likes on the Collins museum visit, more images and more to follow, believe me the photos don't capture everything that is there to be seen in the museum, a true collection of historical pieces from the Normandy battlefields of 1944, make sure of visiting when in Normandy. mikie Posted September 19, 2023 Share #24234 Posted September 19, 2023 The Collins museum brought back memories of the time in the mid 70s when we visited FDRs home in Hyde Park, New York. The guide showed us (among other things) the bathroom famously used by Winston Churchill on his wartime visits. He was in the habit of having chats, conferences, do dictations, etc while luxuriating in the bathtub. It seems he was quite fond of long baths but didn’t let them interfere with whatever he was doing. His staff was quite used to this but it took a bit of getting used to for his American hosts. General Apathy Posted September 25, 2023 Share #24247 Posted September 25, 2023 . Ouistreham Beach Race 2023 . . . . . . . . . . . Life & things move on, but I am still aware that 80 years ago next year the town of Ouistreham and the area of Riva-Bella suffered terribly during the D-Day landings as testified by the following two photographs. Likewise compare the city of Atlanta now to how it looked having been sacked and burned during the American civil war, things and places move on . . . . . . . . . . Norman D. General Apathy Posted September 25, 2023 Share #24248 Posted September 25, 2023 . Ouistreham Beach Race 2023 . . . . . . . . some more shots of the beach race entrants, some cars race others just display. The car below seen with the number 5 on the radiator had driven down to the weekend all the way from Holland. I also spoke with two guys from Finland who had transported a 1938 Ford pick-up down for the show and were continuing onto Spain today once the show had finished. The last two shots are my local friends 1929 Ford model A which I crewed, we were just displaying not racing, he bought it three weeks ago and the race entry applications had closed being over subscribed. Every day of the show the words on everyones lips were ' lovely patina ', followed up by many with ' is it for sale '. It was sprayed five days before the show with the same waterproofing spray that I had used on the Jeep, which my friend now often refers to as ' Snake-Oil '. Norman D.
