Luckily, that part actually came with my jeep together with the original air horn and long screw which are very rare parts themselves.

General Apathy Posted June 10 Share #23709 Posted June 10 . Will it all be over after the 80th anniversary . . . . . . . . This week I was asked the question did I think it would all be over once the 80th anniversary happened next year. Well I have heard this same question since the 30th, and the 40th, the 50th, 60th, 70th, 75th and all I have to say is that there are now more events, monuments, museums every year since I came for the 30th. Driving around to attend the events which I decided we attend we would pass or be de-toured at other events that were happening, we were starting our days around 05h30 and getting to bed after midnight for the past seven days, this morning I managed to lay in bed till 07h30. I have met and spoken to so many people I have never met before, I am pleased to say that there are so many younger people ( and nationalities ) visiting here in uniform and vehicles. Yesterday I had a group of dressed knowledgeable re-enactors stood around my Jeep talking and questioning me about events and sites to see around the area and past events, I almost felt a sense of deja-vu of being the old veteran ( or sage ) surrounded by enquiring youngsters . . . . . . . . . . not hard really at my age. Hopefully now things have quietened somewhat I can post more photos this week. Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, June 10 2023. ... It was just across The Alameda from Santa Clara University, right next to the old Santa Clara train station that I think I posted about here a couple of years ago. Gunji was in an adventurous mood today so I was quite surprised that when I took him for walkies today he lead me right up that way. I honesty did not plan or lead him up there. It was his idea, he lead ME! Have to admit, it is somewhat freaking me out. Anyway, here is Gunji enjoying the grass with the location of that fruit packing plant across the street. Hi mikie, well who leads whom is debatable but you both get there in the end. My daughter emailed me a sad story and photographs, their dog raided the kitchen trash can and found himself a corn-cob and started chomping on it, Laurens husband Robert retrieved everything that was in his mouth and thought that that would be the end of it. Well over-night the swallowed sections blocked his stomach and intestines and he had to have surgery at the Vets. The photos show a shaved underside with a raw looking 10 -12 inch incision and stitches, and open-wallet surgery for my daughter and husband. !!!! Norman D. MCDUFF Posted June 11 Share #23722 Posted June 11 Hi Ken and all, my apologies for not being around during the 79th commemorations. My son, his girlfriend and his friends were over in uniform and with vehicles (yes, this will continue beyond the 79th.) They are so keen to keep the memory alive! I enclose a couple of photos of them. Two of the girls were in nurses uniforms, and just happened to pass Omaha beach memorial when there was a ceremony to commemorate 3 nurses killed. They were asked to join in for the service and photos... The reason I was away next..
MCDUFF Posted June 11 Share #23723 Posted June 11 Hi Ken, we were away in Norway.... A holiday planned by my better half. However, I did manage to squeeze in a little WW2! For those who know the film "The heroes of Telemark" we visited the Hydro-electric plant at Vemork. This is where the 'heavy water' was produced under German Occupation to be used in the nuclear race. The Allies were desperate to destroy it. In summary, with the help of Norwegian Commandos an attempt was made in 1942, but due to bad weather the supporting gliders with British Commandos crashed. Another raid by Norwegian only commandos was made in February 1943, and successful this time with no loss of allied life. This put production out for 6 months. A later bombing raid in 1944 by US heavy bombers only superficially damaged the plant. In February 1944 Norwegian resistance fighters sunk a ferry which was carrying a train with cargo of heavy water into the Tinnsjoen Fjord. These events were all squeezed into the film with obvious Hollywood changes! Here endeth the history lesson, but what a stunning place to visit, and truly historical. The final two photos of a large picture of a GMC snow plough which was in our Hotel, and a lovely DC3 model at the airport... I was sorry to miss Normandy this year, but am very much counting the days for the 80th (and so are my sons and their friends!) Cheers Graham
