I picked up this original Second Army Intelligence Summary at a flea market on Thursday. Just looking through it and came across the Prisoner of War summary.

Thought I would share it with you.

Over last summer I found a box full of these Yale footlocker locks.

I understand that, I don’t understand what it’s about.

They captured 2 elephants?

Is that a joke?

No idea, just thought it was strange thing to find in an official intel report, guess they must have captured a couple of elephants.

Far as I can tell this seems to date from around the late 1950's.

A search on the internet and I found pictures of an elephant being used in Hamburg  being used to clear away wreckage. Apparently the German authorities used 2 elephants from the Hamburg Zoo to help clear up after air raids and this work continued after the war. Presumably these were the 2 elephants. I haven't shown the photos on here as i'm not sure about the copyright implications . I used the search  ' elephants in germany 1945 ' on Google images and turned up several pictures.

Is there a recipe for 5,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or did they leave that out of the French version?

No, not this recipe in this book. I am chauvinistic, cook in the fireplace. A good pot au feu, see beef ribs!

I once had possession of my Dad's copy of his English-Japanese combat phrase book.  It was more like a pamphlet or booklet than a book.  I memorized some of the phrases and used them when playing War with friends as a kid but can't recall any of them now.  I left it with dad when I moved from home.  No idea where it is now but wish I had it.  I've looked for a copy but never found one just like it. Your posts have me thinking about looking around again.

Mikie

I found this online. It is not the book my Dad had, but it was only $5 so couldn’t pass it up. Dad’s booklet definitely said Japanese combat phrase book on the cover and had far fewer pages.  This book has a few pages of military words and phrases but is mostly civilian related. The search continues for the book like my Dad had.
