Selling M1943 Jackets at the Bastogne market, ca 1947 . Hi Johan, Very NICE photos, I see he has a hand written sign on the stand ' STOCK AMERICAIN ', I recall he still had a store in Bastogne in the mid 70's I bought a couple of pieces off him, sadly I think the store name lasted much longer than the original American stocks did. Thanks for sharing your friend with us. Blue was my first dog I inherited him when I bought my second house from a Jeeping friend he liked the screen down, he would have his back legs on the passenger seat, his front legs on the dash and looked great leaning forward into the coming wind and his ears streaming backwards. I think he attracted more admiring glances from female pedestrians than the Jeep owner did, the future wife of another Jeeping friend said that she used to be stood in the bus-stop waiting to go to school and see us pass by, and said that other people at the bust-stop would often say admiring things about the Jeep-dog. !!!!! Blue my first dog in my friends Jeep before he became mine. other dogs that I had, Ben, Max & Pups, all came found as strays. Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, March 28 2023. ... General Apathy Posted March 27, 2023 Share #23278 Posted March 27, 2023 . before bedtime . . . . . . . It's gone midnight but one last story before I climb the apple & pears, or as my parents called them when I was an infant ' the wooden hills '. Going back to the 1970's I was visiting my Jeep friend Bryn, someone else called at the house and left the gate open and Blue wandered off, much later he came crawling back into the garden with his underside all split open obviously run over by a car. We rolled him over onto his back and Bryn poured all his intestines and such back into him and we carried him by his four legs upside down to the Vets which fortunately was only one street away. I can't recall how long he was at the vets but they sorted out his insides, stitched him up and he lived a full life for many years after I inherited him. Goodnight Folks. Norman D. Hi Solcarlus, Thanks for showing us the French language manual for the Bantam trailer, when I used to visit a massive vehicle dealer near Le Bourget airport in Paris I came away one time with a number of French manuals for the Sherman tank, I might still have them. A French friend that lives near Utah beach told me some years ago that when he did his national conscription ( 12 or 18 months about 1979 ) one of the jobs he was given to do was empty the store-rooms of all existing WWII US uniforms and make a bonfire with them, he was distraught as he was commanded to burn brand new unissued M-41 field jackets and also HBT clothing and webbing. General Apathy Posted March 29, 2023 Share #23284 Posted March 29, 2023 . Crooked House Pub for sale . . . . . . . . . a couple of pages back I posted about the days that we used to take our Jeeps mud-plugging near the pub that we used to use for a lunch break, a snack and a pint of beer, well I just received an email showing the asking price for the property. The pub originally started as a farmhouse but due to mining subsidence was sold two hundred years ago and became a public house / bar. . Norman D. General Apathy Posted March 29, 2023 Share #23285 Posted March 29, 2023 . Yesterday's Dumpster Find . . . . . . . A little bit of fun Yesterday I made several trips to the village dump with Jeep trailer loads of tree trimmings, while there I spotted a discarded cycling trophy that I thought I could have some fun with. Back home I easily removed the cycling badges held on with double sided tape and inscribed the Jeep grille logo from my calling card which I have used for many years now. Norman D. Hi Solcarlus, Thanks for showing us French versions of American wartime TM's & FM's, I had a look today for the Sherman manuals I thought I had in French but not so certain I still do, however here's a French phrase book printed in Casablanca in 1942 I suppose during the North African campaign. In the back of my mind I think the manuals went to a Sherman owner who was more interested in all the photographs and diagrams which he could make use of in his restoration. Norman D. Indeed this "phrase-book" had to be edited for the operation "Torch". Here is a very useful technical dictionary for people who do not speak English like me! (Merci Translatort!!!) Sol. Johan Willaert Posted March 31, 2023 Share #23293 Posted March 31, 2023 The past couple of days I've continued work on the displays in the refurbished 'War Building'. I thought about how to display commonly unseen items such as drawers, undershirts, etc.... So I came up with the idea of creating a mock tent with a GI catching up on much needed sleep somewhere in the ETO late in WW2... The GI is asleep in his M1944 Sleeping Bag, on a Folding Cot with his gear and arms close at hand. Next to the bed is a Folding Field Table with chair, with some items on the table. Spare socks and Underwear are hanging from a laundry line across the tent. I'll probably change some details and add some more items in the coming weeks, but for now pleased to see how it turned out... Enjoy, Johan

I memorized some of the phrases and used them when playing War with friends as a kid but can't recall any of them now. I left it with dad when I moved from home. No idea where it is now but wish I had it. I've looked for a copy but never found one just like it. Your posts have me thinking about looking around again. The cigar store in front was donated for use to the US Navy as a recruitment center during WWI. I grew up 200 miles northwest of NYC but only visited it once. And that was 10 years after moving 2200 miles away. mikie
Dogsbody Posted April 3, 2023 Share #23300 Posted April 3, 2023 Hi everyone, just a short message and I don't know how to explain this properly but I will be on and off for a prolonged time due to serious illnes for which I'm undergoing treatment in hospital as we speak. Life's what happens to you while you're busy making plans, well that's certainly true. I hope I will be able to tune in from time to time and add a debatable witty comment but I don't have access to my own computer so I will have to see what's possible.
