Hi Kevin.

I heard SO MANY stories over the years, too many to relate today, never heard of that one.  I have related before that in the late 1970's one of the London boroughs wanted to close down a vehicle scrap-yard that had been there since the end of the war and it was filled with wartime US vehicles mainly half-ton Dodges.  At the rear of the yard was a working Sherman I could have bought for £1,200, I had the money at that time but no storage facilities.  Another one I can relate ( again I have mentioned before ) someone saw my parked Jeep and told me that he knew to two Jeep bodies on a farm at the side of Castle Bromwich airfield, one evening I visited the farm and the owner said that he had had two bodies that he had sold a few weeks prior.  As I turned to walk away he said would I be interested in all the other vehicle spares that were still littered around the barns.  I piled up and bought everything I recognised as Jeep, and left the rest.  Appears that his farm was used for un-crating Jeeps and Dodges during the war, and the wood from the crates had been used around the farm, his chicken shed was built from Willys crates and the stencilled details were still legible, no camera phones in those days . . . . . . . . .

Lastly I was told where Easy Co.  506th buried all their non-military pieces when they departed for D-Day, unfortunately it's now a commercial property and I doubt open to a suggestion to dig up their land.   Relating back to Castle Bromwich airfield it has often been said that there were crated Spitfire engines buried on the airfield, which is now a housing estate . . . . . . .  So many stories, and of course there is the Council estate in London and the fences of the houses are metal framed ARP stretchers from WWII.

Hi Ken

Didn't you once find a Waco glider being used as a garage in Stafford ?

My hunting grounds were the Ardennes and the gear I used to find back in the 80's and 90's was incredible. Always on farms. Back in the 70's I was told by the people on the Belgian farm I worked on that iu should ask around the farms as they would probably have items. I never got round to doing it for another 10  yrs. I always wonder what I missed in that time.

506 dump...... would that be the one in the pubs back garden ? I did offer to dig it out just in case they had left anything dangerous behind in there but for some reason they weren't keen on me digging up their pub garden.

Lichfield (RAF Fradley) has always had stories of buried aircraft on it but having grown up with people that worked there I never found anyone who could recall seeing that happen. My dad  was based there in the early 50's and he was MT section who would have been tasked with disposing of anything.

That is really cool Ken, thank you! Again, I have never seen a spot light like that! Did you see the canvas cover over the spare wheel?! Another first!!! Cheers Graham

Good eye! I thought it was mentioned that these covers were not used. Maybe I misunderstood.

Hi Kevin,

yes it was the pub that I was told about and that was a long time before the Band of Brothers series was filmed, which was repeated again straight from the mouths of the Band of Brothers veterans when they visited the stables around 2004. Yes there was a Waco glider minus the front cabin in the back streets of Stafford being used as a garage, I took photos of the inside at the time but that was back in the 1980's .

The Fradley airfield story was often heard and not far from Leavesley's surplus where I bought many pieces in the early 80's, the M-1941 stoves I dug out last week came from there. I recently put an exhaust box on the Jeep, one of several that I bought in the 1980's from Leavesley's and held as Jeep spares, forward planning.

Hi Kat,

Pleased that you are interested enough to be asking questions.  There is no mention in any of the versions of the Jeep manuals and parts list of a cover for the spare wheel.  This Jeep appears to be on an American base and is possibly a base parade car, it's the only one I have seen with such a spot light fixed central to the grille.  In the same photo it can be seen there is no horn fitted to the bracket, but that doesn't mean that all Jeeps never had a horn, this one photo can't be used as a generalisation of all Jeeps.  !!!!  Not meaning to be rude with that statement.

Shown is the list of ' Tarpaulin's ' for the Jeep, no wheel cover is mentioned, and what purpose would it serve anyway. ????

Jeep is a flat-top-grill GPW... Not sure if that spare wheel has a cover or if it's just a worn (civvy?) tire? Also note the what I think is a Fram oilfilter housing, with the pointy lid. Always a subject of discussion for jeep guys lol

Hi Ken

The highlight of a Military show this weekend was meeting up with a 2nd Parachute Battalion Arnhem veteran again. We met him last year and corresponded.

This year he presented one of his own Cap badges to my son. They had a close bond from day one. A very emotional and proud moment all round. What a truly remarkable man. We are in awe of this lovely gentle man.

He enjoyed the banter around the Arnhem re-enactors, and signed one of the para modified Jeeps.

Ted "little legs" Hickman a Bren gunner was wounded on day 6 and was subsequently taken prisoner.

What a generation!

Cheers Graham

Hi Ken

I'd forgotten about Leavesleys. When my Dad left the RAF after 22 yrs Mr Leavesley gave my Dad a job, they knew each other for a long time going back to the 1950's.

Think I read about the air raid trenches in the pub garden in either Currahee paperback or the unit history long before Band Of  Brothers. My core collection was 506thPIR with some nice pieces from Filthy Thirteen including a Jake Mc Niece jump jacket . It all went to live in Wales when I sold up. I remember the list of what they were supposed to have buried there and would have been well worth digging up. Got to look around the stables as well long before they were dismantled and shipped to US.

Ken,

Thanks so much for this explanation. I truly love learning about jeeps.

PS. I went to the used book store today. No books about vehicles but I did get one about a nurse on Battaan. She was one of the Angels.

Hi Kat,

A vehicle that I would have always liked to have found was this experimental Dodge, which has the appearance of a jumbo sized Jeep.

Funny that you should mention Battaan, only a few days ago I was looking at three Post Exchange brass coins from Battaan, can't recall where I was looking at them and put down. .

Well I have seen it all now . . . . . . . . . .

A bunch of us drove over to a village fete today close to St. Lo, I have seen people over many years looking at the Jeeps, touching them, stroking them, tapping them etc etc . . . . . . .

But today we watched one woman do all that then she lent over and smelt the canvas backrest on the passenger side of my Jeep and after passing comment her husband did the same after her !!!! . . . . . . . . . . . 🤣 🤣

It was a great show, one of the main streets was blocked off and around a hundred vehicles lined the street, entrants were given a coffee and triple crepe on arrival, an aperitif near lunchtime, lunch was a large barbecued sausage in a bread roll and fried potato wedges ( first time I have been served wedges rather than frites at a show, they were delicious ), a glass of wine or beer and baked apple sponge dessert cooked by the women of the village. The show today coincides with the liberation of the village, what a friendly receptive commune, ‘ La Chapalle en Juger '.

Contrast that with UK shows now charging hundreds to attend their show with your vehicle . . . . . . . . Today was free entry for all visitors and free lunch for all vehicle owners all provided by the Mayors office.

Made a new friend today . . . . . . . .

I need a new six-volt battery for the Jeep and they are not available from most suppliers, fortunately I bumped into Hervie at the show today he had his late 30's car on show and he runs a vehicle spares store, so I asked if he could supply the style of six volt used on WWII Jeeps.  The batteries on WWII Jeeps must have two lead bars on the top and most modern six-volt batteries don't have the lead bars visible on top of the case.

Another one of my friends walked over to join us and I laughed as I tugged the front of Hervie's denim jacket apart exposing a Led Zeppelin tee shirt, although I have visited Hervie's' store many times I have never seen him with a Zeppelin shirt on.  Hervie looked a little bewildered and my friend explained that I became friends with Led Zeppelin back in the 70's when I lived in the next street to Robert Plant. Anyway he has seen and read everything possible about Zeppelin so I said that when I go down to his store to pick up the Jeep battery I will take my signed birthday album with me and he can have a photograph holding it.

Caterpillar used to do a 6 volt battery for the donkey engine on their bulldozers etc that was a dead ringer for the Jeep one. Guy I had all the Jeep stuff off back in the day had found them . No idea if they still do them or how much. But I guess they make modern repros now for the lassic car market.

Hi Ken

It's a different world over there and for things like this a much nicer one. it's done out of a genuine gratitude for what happened in 1944 and 45 . Liberation meant so much to these communities and even though most of that generation have gone  they installed their gratitude into their children and grandchildren. You see it in the welcome the families of the Veterans still receive when they visit.

Hi Kevin,  yes you are correct that the respect is passed on from generation to generation, also the vast majority of the population are still family orientated.

Also Kevin I just heard that a Jeeping friend Bob Duthie of Coleshill, Warwickshire died on Sunday from Cancer, maybe you knew or heard of him.

' Theme ' park planned for Normandy . . . . .

There has been talk for some time of building some form of ' D-Day Theme Park ' in Normandy, it's not exactly clear what that means . . . .

in principal I am against it if it isn't respectful, the following article was published a few days ago and not entirely informative of what would be expected to be seen.  However it worries me that the town of Carentan would ultimately be changed from what it was, is now and it's natural gentle evolution into the future. There is mention that it would cover thirty-five acres, and we have observed soil tests being carried out quite literally on the fence line of the existing Victory museum. Mention is made of 600,000 visitors a year ( that's 12,000 a week over a fifty-two week year ), this amount of visitors could not be catered for with the existing infrastructure and road systems, so changes would occur.

Using the old saying as a warning ' be careful what you wish for '

Oh, that's a very common way to find out how fearfull your Jeep passengers have been. Fear produces sweat with a very distinctive smell, you know and she probably picked up on this. 😉

I recently went for the 6V Optima Red Top, I'll need to gut an old, dead battery like this to make a cover for it to make it look 'period'.

Ken,

Looks like a great time was had by all! Very interesting seeing the jeep parked on the side of the road that way.

I assume your jeep did not have that "new car smell". 😁

Hi Ken

Sorry to hear about your friend. I don't think that I knew him but might have bumped into him at various events back in the day.

When I lived in Belgium the liberation day anniversary was always the one celebrated in the village in September. I don't recall VE Day being celebrated.

Kevin

Hi Ron,

You added the wartime photo back in post #21332 28th July, I passed through Monthuchon Tuesday on the way into Coutances, the house is more visible now as the tree-lines have changed.

Just over the brow of the hill past the house the town of Coutances is visible in the valley ( misty & raining Tuesday ) the cathedral spires evident in the centre of the photo
