New memorial unveiled this week . . . . . .

A few days ago a new memorial was unveiled dedicated to Pilot officer Robert Joseph Sarvis, July 1917 - July 1944 ( aged 27 ).  Sarvis was born in Canada before his parents emigrated to America while he was young. He schooled in America and attended the university of Murfreesboro, early in WWII he volunteered for the Canadian airforce  ( before America joined the war ) where he was trained as a pilot and sent for service to the UK.  He piloted a Lancaster bomber initially wearing RAF uniform but once the USAAF arrived in the UK he wore American uniform but remained with his RAF squadron and crew.

I believe that at one stage several years ago one of the forum members posted a grouping of Sarvis's medals, insignia and paperwork.

The third photo shows the exact crash site and the location of his memorial 600 metres away, beside a quiet rest area with benches and tables.

Just to add fuel to your flea market fire, here is my latest discovery at my local one a couple of weeks ago.  If I'm not very much mistaken, its a BAR oil can.  There are no markings on it anywhere that I can see.  Sadly, there is almost nothing about these online. So no idea if it is from 1918 or 1968, or even if it's US.

Good luck on finding some good fleas at the market!

Hi Mikie,

Jeeping friend Len has photographed one of his manuals for you . . . . . . . Thanks Len.

actually good detail for forum members and collectors when touring around flea markets . . . . . . . .

Forgot to mention before in all the years of my growing up my father had a can exactly identical to yours in his garden tool shed, which he regularly used to oil down the metal tools during storage.

Great!  Please be sure to thank Len for me.  And thanks Ken for passing this on.  Since Dad carried a BAR on Okinawa, I'm always interested in anything about them.  I plan to clean it up a bit and see about using it as an oiler as intended.

Just looking through the photographs in my files I realised that I had never added this find, so here it is.

Hi Ron

Well I learnt something from your second image the name of the place I pass through on the road to Coutances, I memorise buildings not road signs and the buildings on the left and right are as I would view them currently when I approach Coutances.  When cresting the hill at the top of the photo the whole valley below is where Coutances stands, the size of the town and all the church spires are evident.

For many years on July the 14th we have paraded a convoy of military vehicles past the steps of the town hall in Coutances with the Mayor and all the local dignitaries standing on the sweeping steps of the town hall, sadly this year we had a prior arrangement in place and missed the parade.  Hopefully we can parade again in 2023.

Hi Ron,

I am familiar with Periers having friends that live on the outskirts there.  The building on the left was and still is the town hall, the church survived and was repaired.  The town square is off to the right of the church, a story I was told relates to the town butcher, the allies had dropped leaflets warning of an intended bombing raid on the town, unfortunately the leaflets drifted past the town and went unseen.

When the bombing raid started the wife and daughter of the butcher had walked across the square to a store opposite, the butcher ran out of his shop to find his wife and daughter as he did so a bomb landed straight into his store and the lock from the front door was blown across the square hitting him in the spine and killing him . . . . . . .

I have shown comparison shots of Periers church previously but from a different side. I will make a comparison of this shot on my next visit to Periers

Hi Ron,

This small town is on the road from Periers to Coutances and this is the main crossroads in the town, the church, town-hall and a glass fronted market building are behind all the women on the left.  From memory the buildings left and right are still identical today, again I will make comparisons next time I am passing through.

Ken you mentioned Coutances and these were also posted. Know your fondness of signage.

appears a charge set for detonation on the tree. Possibly to block the road or make a obstacle for the Armor and vehicles.

FIRE EATER painted on the side of the Stuart. Also looks like a added on equipment rack to the rear of the turret.

Over turned jeep with a wire catcher on the front. Looks like a cable attached to the jeep leading to the tank.

Medics attending the injured. M1 helmet on the ground and a combat photographer filming the scene
